Abstract

An orthopedic device includes an orthopedic frame, a strap system connected to and depending from the frame and arranged to secure to a limb or joint of a wearer, and a bladder system connected to the strap system. The bladder system has a bladder positioned on the strap system and is arranged between the strap system and the limb or joint of the wearer. The orthopedic device may also include a load cell device connected to the strap system and arranged to monitor pressure exerted on the limb or joint of the wearer, and a tightening mechanism connected to the load cell and arranged to adjust the pressure of the strap system in response to a pressure reading from the load cell. The bladder system and the load cells supplement the strap system to provide for more dynamic support to the limb or joint of the wearer.

Claims (13)

1. An orthopedic device, comprising:

an orthopedic frame having upper and lower frame elements;

a strap system connected to and depending from the upper and lower frame elements and arranged to secure to a joint or limb of a wearer, the strap system including first and second straps intersecting between the upper and lower frame elements, each of the first and second straps is provided with a bladder positioned on a corresponding one of the first and second straps, each of the bladders is arranged between the at least one strap and a joint or limb of a wearer so as to be on a side of the at least one strap facing the joint or limb, the bladder of the first strap located above the bladder of the second strap and located at the same side of an intersection point of the first and second straps, whereby the bladders supplement the strap system to provide dynamic and additional support to a joint or limb of a wearer;

wherein each of the bladders is located on a respective one of the straps between the upper and lower frame elements over a localized segment of the respective one of the straps.

2. The orthopedic device according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second straps connect to the upper and lower frame elements, respectively, at a first side of the orthopedic device, and extending obliquely relative to one another toward a junction located at a second side opposite from the first side of the orthopedic device.

3. The orthopedic device according to claim 2 , wherein the upper and lower frame elements are arranged for securing to proximal and distal portions above and below, respectively, a knee, and the junction arranged to be located at either a lateral of medial side of a knee.

4. The orthopedic device according to claim 3 , further comprising a hinge along a side of the orthopedic device opposite the junction.

5. The orthopedic device according to claim 2 , wherein the orthopedic device is a single upright knee brace and further comprises a hinge located along the first side of the orthopedic device opposite the junction and connecting the upper and lower frame elements along the first side of the device, the second side of the device defining a clearance between the upper and lower frame elements without a hinge.

6. The orthopedic device according to claim 1 , wherein the bladders are located at positions whereat the strap system applies a maximum pressure against a joint or limb of a wearer.

7. The orthopedic device according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second straps extending toward a junction, and the first bladder is located at least adjacent to the junction.

8. The orthopedic device according to claim 1 , wherein the frame is substantially rigid.

9. The orthopedic device according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second straps are substantially inelastic.

10. The orthopedic device according to claim 1 , wherein a pump is connected to and located proximate to at least one of the first and second bladders.
