Abstract

The present invention provides a test strip for measuring a concentration of an analyte of interest in a biological fluid, wherein the test strip may be encoded with information that can be read by a test meter into which the test strip is inserted.

Claims (30)

1. A test system for measuring a concentration of an analyte of interest in a biological fluid, the test system comprising:

a test meter comprising a connector having at least ten contacts; and

a test strip adapted to be inserted into the test meter connector, the test strip comprising:

a substrate having a surface;

at least one measurement electrode formed on the surface;

at least ten contact pad positions defined on the surface;

wherein the at least ten contacts make contact with the respective at least ten contact pad positions when the test strip is inserted into the test meter connector;

wherein one contact pad position is not electrically coupled to the at least one measurement electrode.

2. The test system of claim 1 , wherein:

the at least ten contacts comprise at least eleven contacts; and

the at least ten contact pad positions comprise at least eleven contact pad positions.

3. The test system of claim 1 , wherein:

the at least ten contacts comprise at least sixteen contacts; and

the at least ten contact pad positions comprise at least sixteen contact pad positions.

4. A test system for measuring a concentration of an analyte of interest in a biological fluid, the test system comprising:

a test meter comprising a connector having at least ten contacts; and

a test strip adapted to be inserted into the test meter connector, the test strip comprising:

a substrate having a surface, an insertion end and a non-insertion end;

at least ten contact pad positions defined on the surface, wherein a first portion of the at least ten contact pad positions are positioned a first distance from the insertion end, and a second portion of the at least ten contact pad positions are positioned a second distance from the insertion end, the second distance being greater than the first distance;

wherein the at least ten contacts make contact with the respective at least ten contact pad positions when the test strip is inserted into the test meter connector.

5. The test system of claim 4 , wherein the first portion comprises a first row of contact pad positions having a first axis and the second portion comprises a second row of contact pad positions having a second axis.

6. The test system of claim 5 , wherein a third portion of the at least ten contacts passes over the first axis and comes to rest on the second axis as the test strip is inserted into the test meter connector.

7. A test system for measuring a concentration of an analyte of interest in a biological fluid, the test system comprising:

a test meter comprising a connector having at least ten contacts; and

a test strip adapted to be inserted into the test meter connector, the test strip comprising:

a substrate having a surface, an insertion end and a non-insertion end;

at least ten contact pad positions defined on the surface, a subset of the contact pad positions form a first group and a subset of the contact pad positions form a second group, wherein at least one contact pad position of the first group of contact pad positions is a first distance from the insertion end, and at least one contact pad position of the second group of contact pad positions is a second distance from the insertion end, the second distance being greater than the first distance;

wherein the at least ten contacts make contact with the respective at least ten contact pad positions when the test strip is inserted into the test meter connector.

8. The test system of claim 7 , wherein the first group comprises a first row of contact pad positions having a first axis and the second group comprises a second row of contact pad positions having a second axis.

9. The test system of claim 8 , wherein a first portion of the at least ten contacts passes over the first axis and comes to rest on the second axis as the test strip is inserted into the test meter connector.
