Removal of adenine during a pathogen reduction process in whole blood or red blood cells by dilution
View Patent ↗The methods of this invention involve preventing the formation of a complex between adenine and riboflavin by reducing the amount of adenine in a solution containing blood or blood components to be pathogen reduced.
1. A method for treating a quantity of platelets to reduce pathogens which may be present therein, the method comprising:
adding a volume of a washing solution to a fluid comprising: platelets and a platelet storage solution comprising adenine;
washing the fluid to remove adenine and create a washed fluid comprising the platelets;
adding a pathogen reduction-effective, non-toxic amount of 7,8-dimethyl-10-ribityl isoalloxazine photosensitizer to the washed fluid; and
reducing pathogens in the washed fluid by exposing the washed fluid containing the photosensitizer and the platelets to photoradiation of sufficient wavelength and energy to activate the photosensitizer.
2. A method for treating a quantity of red blood cells to reduce pathogens which may be present therein, the method comprising:
adding a volume of a washing solution to a fluid comprising: red blood cells and a red blood cell storage solution comprising adenine;
washing the fluid to remove adenine and create a washed fluid comprising the red blood cells;
adding a pathogen reduction-effective, non-toxic amount of 7,8-dimethyl-10-ribityl isoalloxazine photosensitizer to the washed fluid; and
reducing pathogens in the washed fluid by exposing the washed fluid containing the photosensitizer and the red blood cells to photoradiation of sufficient wavelength and energy to activate the photosensitizer.
3. The method of claim 2 wherein the washing further comprises a plurality of washing steps.
4. The method of claim 2 wherein the adding the pathogen reduction-effective, non-toxic amount of 7,8-dimethyl-10-ribityl isoalloxazine photosensitizer step, further comprises placing the washed fluid in a container transparent to photoradiation, adding the photosensitizer to the fluid in the container and agitating the container.
