Abstract

A digital signal processor (DSP) operating within, for example, an optical receiver wherein the DSP processes complex sample streams derived from a received modulated optical signal, the DSP configured to perform a method comprising: processing at least one block of symbols within a complex symbol stream to define a received constellation having symbols located within decision boundaries; and verifying that the received constellation does not exhibit errors by comparing the received constellation to each of a sequence of reference constellations having corresponding phase shifts within an angular ambiguity range of the first constellation.

Claims (31)

1. A digital signal processor (DSP) configured to process complex sample streams derived from a received modulated optical signal, the DSP configured to perform a method comprising:

processing at least one block of symbols within a complex symbol stream to define a received constellation having symbols located within decision boundaries; and

verifying the received constellation by comparing the received constellation to each of a sequence of reference constellations having corresponding phase shifts within an angular ambiguity range of the received constellation, wherein the reference constellations comprise reference constellations corresponding to possible rotation errors of the received constellation and reference constellations corresponding to possible inversion errors of the received constellation and the inversion errors comprise one of an in-phase component inversion error and a quadrature phase component inversion error.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one block of symbols is processed using a frequency locked loop (FLL).

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the reference constellations comprise successive constellations rotated within a lock-in range of the FLL.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein received constellation is defined by determining a one of a sequence of reference constellations exhibiting a least mean square (LMS) error over the at least one block of symbols.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the received constellation is compared to each of 10 reference constellations.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the received constellation is sequentially compared to each of a plurality of reference constellations.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the received complex constellation is compared in parallel to each of a plurality of reference constellations.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reference constellations are adapted during operation according to one or more signal quality parameter including noise, distortion and frequency offset.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the modulated optical signal comprises one of a rectangular QAM, regular or irregular star-QAM, phase shift keying (PSK), amplitude shift keying (ASK) and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) optical signal.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the received constellation includes symbols associated with a reference pattern.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the reference pattern symbols are associated with a bit pattern within a received data stream.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the bit pattern comprises one or more of a packet check sequence, a frame check sequence, a pseudorandom pattern and a gold code.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the complex sample streams are derived from a received polarization division multiplexed (PDM) differentially encoded quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) optical signal.

14. A digital signal processor (DSP) configured to process complex sample streams to find a correct phase angel of a received constellation, the DSP configured to perform a method comprising:

derotating the received constellation using a frequency locked loop (FLL); and

comparing the derotated constellation to each of a plurality of reference constellations within an angular ambiguity range of the underlying constellation.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the complex sample streams are derived from a received polarization division multiplexed (PDM) quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) optical signal.

16. An optical receiver adapted to receive a polarization division multiplexed (PDM) optical signal, the optical receiver comprising:

a digital signal processor (DSP) configured to process complex sample streams derived from a received polarization division multiplexed (PDM) optical signal, the DSP configured to perform a method comprising:

derotating the received constellation using a frequency locked loop (FLL); and

comparing the derotated constellation to each of a plurality of reference constellations within the angular ambiguity range of the underlying constellation.

17. Optical signal receiver apparatus, comprising:

a digital signal processor (DSP) configured to process complex sample streams derived from a received optical signal, the DSP configured to perform a method comprising:

processing at least one block of symbols within a complex symbol stream to define a received constellation having symbols located within decision boundaries; and

verifying that the received constellation does not exhibit errors by comparing the received constellation to each of a sequence of reference constellations having corresponding phase shifts within an angular ambiguity range of the first constellation, wherein the reference constellations comprise reference constellations corresponding to possible rotation errors of the received constellation and reference constellations corresponding to possible inversion errors of the received constellation and the inversion errors comprise one of an in-phase component inversion error and a quadrature phase component inversion error.
