Abstract

Described herein are implantable composites, kits comprising the composites, implant devices comprising the composites, and methods of making and using same, including point of use methods.

Claims (17)

1. An implantable composite comprising: an elastic band having at least one continuous elongate surface and comprising a biocompatible polymer and a bioactive agent, wherein the biocompatible polymer is biodegradable, the biocompatible polymer comprising a terpolymer of lactide, glycolide, and caprolactone residues, wherein the lactide is present in an amount of from about 10 to about 60 mole percent, the glycolide is present in an amount of from about 10 to about 40 mole percent, and the caprolactone is present in an amount of from about 20 to about 70 mole percent; wherein the biocompatible polymer is cross-linked and has an initial force modulus of less than 100 N/cm.

2. The implantable composite of claim 1 , wherein the elastic band is a single-layered elastic band.

3. The implantable composite of claim 1 , wherein the elastic band has a diameter of from about 1 cm to about 50 cm , when the elastic band is not expanded.

4. The implantable composite of any of claims 1 , wherein the elastic band has a diameter of from about 5 cm to about 25 cm , when the elastic band is not expanded.

5. The implantable composite of any of claims 1 , wherein the elastic band has a diameter of from about 7 cm to about 15 cm, when the elastic band is not expanded.

6. The implantable composite of claim 1 , wherein the bioactive agent is encapsulated within a microparticle.

7. The implantable composite of claim 1 , wherein the bioactive agent comprises at least one of an antibiotic, antimicrobial, a growth factor, a growth inhibitor, an immunomodulator, a steroid, or an anti-inflammatory.

8. The implantable composite of claim 1 , wherein the implantable composite is contacting an implant device.

9. The implantable composite of claim 1 , wherein the implantable composite is implanted in a subject.

10. An implant device comprising: the implantable composite comprising an elastic band having at least one continuous elongate surface and comprising a biocompatible polymer and a bioactive agent, wherein the implantable composite is secured to at least a portion of a surface of the implant device, wherein the biocompatible polymer is biodegradable, the biocompatible polymer comprising a terpolymer of lactide, glycolide, and caprolactone residues, wherein the lactide is present in an amount of from about 10 to about 60 mole percent, the glycolide is present in an amount of from about 10 to about 40 mole percent, and the caprolactone is present in an amount of from about 20 to about 70 mole percent; wherein the biocompatible polymer is cross-linked and has an initial force modulus of less than 100 N/cm.

11. The implant device of claim 10 , wherein the implant device is implanted in a subject.

12. The implant device of claim 10 , wherein the implant device comprises a pump, pacemaker, defibrillator, or stimulator.

13. A method of applying an implantable composite comprising an elastic band having at least one continuous elongate surface and comprising a biocompatible polymer and a bioactive agent, to an implant device, the method comprising securing the implantable composite onto a surface of an implant device, substantially close to the time when the implant device is implanted in a subject, wherein the biocompatible polymer is biodegradable, the biocompatible polymer comprising a terpolymer of lactide, glycolide, and caprolactone residues, wherein the lactide is present in an amount of from about 10 to about 60 mole percent, the glycolide is present in an amount of from about 10 to about 40 mole percent, and the caprolactone is present in an amount of from about 20 to about 70 mole percent; wherein the biocompatible polymer is cross-linked and has an initial force modulus of less than 100 N/cm.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising implanting the implant device in a subject.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the implantable composite is secured to the surface of the implant device prior to the time when the implant device is implanted in the subject.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the implantable composite is secured to the surface of the implant device at or after the time when the implant device is implanted in the subject.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the implant device comprises a pump, pacemaker, defibrillator, or stimulator.
