Abstract

An acoustic sensor is configured to provide accurate and robust measurement of bodily sounds under a variety of conditions, such as in noisy environments or in situations in which stress, strain, or movement may be imparted onto a sensor with respect to a patient. Embodiments of the sensor provide a conformable electrical shielding, as well as improved acoustic and mechanical coupling between the sensor and the measurement site.

Claims (29)

1. An acoustic sensor assembly for non-invasively sensing acoustic vibrations indicative of one or more physiological parameters of a medical patient, comprising:

a frame defining an open cavity having a closed side and an open side;

a sensing element configured to output a signal responsive to acoustic vibrations, the sensing element supported by the frame, at least a portion of the sensing element comprising a piezoelectric material and extending across the open side of the open cavity;

electronic components including circuitry configured to receive an electrical signal corresponding to the signal responsive to acoustic vibrations, the electronic components supported by the frame and electrically coupled with the sensing element, said closed side of the open cavity positioned between the electronic components and the open side of the open cavity such that the frame provides a physical barrier between the electronic components and the open cavity; and

an acoustic coupler supported by the frame and positioned to apply pressure to the portion of the sensing element extending across the open side of the open cavity to bias the sensing element at a predetermined tension into said open cavity, the acoustic coupler configured to transmit acoustic vibrations to the sensing element through the acoustic coupler when the acoustic sensor assembly is attached to the medical patient,

wherein the sensing element is configured to output the signal while the sensing element is biased at the predetermined tension, wherein the acoustic coupler biases at least a first portion of the sensing element at a predetermined tension into the open cavity both when the acoustic sensor assembly is attached to the medical patient and when the acoustic sensor assembly is not attached to the medical patient, wherein a portion of the acoustic coupler in contact with the first portion of the sensing element also extends into the open cavity,

wherein the portion of the acoustic coupler that extends in to the open cavity comprises an inner protrusion disposed on an inside surface of the acoustic coupler, the inner protrusion applying the pressure to the portion of the sensing element extending across the open side of the open cavity to bias the at least first portion of the sensing element at the predetermined tension into the open cavity.

2. The acoustic sensor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the acoustic coupler electrically insulates the sensing element from the medical patient when the acoustic sensor assembly is attached to the medical patient.

3. The acoustic sensor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the acoustic coupler electrically isolates the sensing element from the medical patient when the acoustic sensor assembly is attached to the medical patient.

4. The acoustic sensor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the acoustic coupler comprises an elastomer.

5. The acoustic sensor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the acoustic coupler is configured to evenly distribute pressure on the sensing element.

6. The acoustic sensor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the acoustic coupler comprises a gel.

7. The acoustic sensor assembly of claim 6 , wherein the gel provides acoustic impedance matching between a measurement site of the patient and the sensing element.

8. The acoustic sensor assembly of claim 1 , further comprising an information element supported by the frame.

9. The acoustic sensor assembly of claim 8 , wherein the information element is configured to store sensor use information.

10. The acoustic sensor assembly of claim 8 , wherein the information element is configured to store sensor compatibility information.

11. The acoustic sensor assembly of claim 8 , wherein the information element is configured to store sensor calibration information.

12. The acoustic sensor assembly of claim 8 , further comprising a cable in communication with the sensing element and a connector attached to the cable, wherein the information element is supported by the connector.

13. The acoustic sensor assembly of claim 8 , wherein the information element comprises one or more memory devices.

14. The acoustic sensor assembly of claim 1 , further comprising an attachment element configured to apply a predetermined force to the frame during use.

15. A method of non-invasively sensing acoustic vibrations indicative of one or more physiological parameters of a medical patient comprising: providing an acoustic sensor according to claim 1 ;

attaching the acoustic sensor to the medical patient, wherein the acoustic coupler is placed in contact with the medical patient; and outputting a signal responsive to acoustic vibrations indicative of a physiological parameter of the medical patient based on acoustic vibrations transmitted through the acoustic coupler and detected by the sensing element while the sensing element is biased to the predetermined tension.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the attaching further comprises using an attachment assembly of the acoustic sensor configured to apply a predetermined force to the frame, wherein the acoustic sensor is pressed against the medical patient.

17. An acoustic sensor assembly for non-invasively sensing acoustic vibrations indicative of one or more physiological parameters of a medical patient, comprising:

a frame defining an open cavity having a closed side and an open side;

a sensing element configured to output a signal responsive to acoustic vibrations, the sensing element supported by the frame, at least a portion of the sensing element comprising a piezoelectric material and extending across the open side of the open cavity;

electronic components including circuitry configured to receive an electrical signal corresponding to the signal responsive to acoustic vibrations, the electronic components supported by the frame and electrically coupled with the sensing element, said closed side of the open cavity positioned between the electronic components and the open side of the open cavity such that the frame provides a physical barrier between the electronic components and the open cavity; and
