Abstract

A penile prosthesis implantation device comprises a barrel having a bore, an obturator and a needle clamp. The obturator has a longitudinal axis, a first end and a second end. The second end of the obturator is adapted for slidable insertion into the bore of the barrel. The needle clamp is coupled to the second end of the obturator and comprises first and second pinching surfaces that are separated by a gap.

Claims (57)

1. A penile prosthesis implantation device comprising:

a barrel having a bore defined by an interior wall of the barrel;

an obturator having a longitudinal axis, a first end and a second end, the second end adapted for slidable insertion into the bore; and

a needle clamp at the second end of the obturator comprising:

a first pinching member including a proximal end attached to the second end of the obturator, a first pinching surface, and a first deflector portion extending from a distal end of the first pinching member away from the longitudinal axis; and

a second pinching member including a proximal end attached to the second end of the obturator, a second pinching surface, and a second deflector portion extending from a distal end of the second pinching member away from the longitudinal axis;

wherein the first and second pinching members respectively engage the interior wall of the barrel only with the first and second deflector portions when the needle clamp is retracted within the barrel.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the clamp includes a receiving position, in which the first and second deflector portions are extended outside of the bore and the clamp is configured to receive an end of a needle within a gap between the first and second pinching surfaces.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the clamp includes a clamping position, in which the first and second deflector portions engage the barrel and bias the first and second pinching surfaces toward each other, and the clamp is configured to secure the end of the needle between the first and second pinching surfaces.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein a length of the gap between the first and second pinching surfaces when the clamp is in the receiving position is larger than the length of the gap when the clamp is in the clamping position.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the barrel comprises first and second ends, an internal diameter of the bore in the first end is greater than the internal diameter of the bore in the second end.

6. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a needle having a connecting end opposite a pointed tip, wherein the connecting end is between the first and second pinching surfaces.

7. The device of claim 6 , further comprising a needle guard comprising:

a first member covering the bore at an end of the barrel;

a second member engaging the first end of the obturator; and

a third member coupled to the first and second members of the needle guard;

wherein the needle is recessed within the bore and the pointed tip is positioned adjacent the end of the barrel.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein the first member partially extends within the bore of the barrel.

9. The device of claim 8 , wherein:

the obturator includes a cross member at the first end extending transversely from the longitudinal axis; and

the second member of the needle guard engages the cross member.

10. The device of claim 9 , further comprising a fourth member positioned between the cross member and the barrel, the fourth member configured to limit movement of the obturator toward the barrel along the longitudinal axis.

11. A kit comprising:

a penile prosthesis implantation device comprising:

a barrel having a bore;

an obturator having a longitudinal axis, a first end and a second end, the second end adapted for slidable insertion into the bore;

a needle clamp at the second end of the obturator comprising first and second pinching surfaces separated by a gap;

a needle having a connecting end held between the first and second pinching surfaces, and a pointed tip opposite the connecting end and recessed within the bore adjacent an end of the barrel;

a penile prosthesis;

a suture having a first end connected to the connecting end of the needle, and a second end connected to the penile prosthesis;

a needle guard comprising:

a first member configured to cover the end of the barrel;

a second member engaging the first end of the obturator; and

a third member coupled to the first and second members; and

packaging containing the device, the penile prosthesis, the suture, and the needle guard.

12. The kit of claim 11 , wherein:

the kit further comprises a device holder within the packaging, the device holder including a device receiving portion and a prosthesis receiving portion; and

the device is held by the device receiving portion; and

the penile prosthesis is held by the prosthesis receiving portion.

13. The kit of claim 11 , wherein:

the obturator includes a cross member at the first end extending transversely from the longitudinal axis; and

the second member of the needle guard engages the cross member.

14. A penile prosthesis implantation device comprising:

a barrel having a bore;

an obturator having a longitudinal axis, a first end and a second end, the second end adapted for slidable insertion into the bore;

a needle clamp at the second end of the obturator comprising first and second pinching surfaces separated by a gap;

a needle having a connecting end opposite a pointed tip, wherein the connecting end is between the first and second pinching surfaces; and

a needle guard comprising:

a first member covering the bore at an end of the barrel;

a second member engaging the first end of the obturator; and

a third member coupled to the first and second members;

wherein the needle is recessed within the bore and the pointed tip is positioned adjacent the end of the barrel.

15. The device of claim 14 , wherein the first member partially extends within the bore of the barrel.

16. The device of claim 15 , wherein:

the obturator includes a cross member at the first end extending transversely from the longitudinal axis; and

the second member of the needle guard engages the cross member.

17. The device of claim 16 , further comprising a fourth member positioned between the cross member and the barrel, the fourth member configured to limit movement of the obturator toward the barrel along the longitudinal axis.
