Abstract

The present invention relates to a system and method for implementing auto-configurable default polarity. More specifically, the present invention relates to a transceiver module comprising, for example, a single chip multi-sublayer PHY, where the single chip multi-sublayer PHY is adapted to implement auto-configurable default polarity. In one embodiment, the transceiver module comprises at least one program module adapted to be programmed with at least a default polarity setting. The single-chip multi-sublayer PHY comprises at least one selection register communicating with at least the program module, where the selection register is adapted to store at least the default polarity setting. The single chip multi-sublayer PHY further comprises at least one multiplexer communicating with at least the selection register and adapted to select one polarity from at least two possible polarities based at least in part on the default polarity setting.

Claims (43)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a physical layer (PHY) system comprising:

at least one selection register adapted to receive at least one default polarity setting from at least one program module upon start up and store said at least one default polarity setting;

at least one selection module in communication with said at least one selection register and adapted to select at least one polarity from at least two possible polarities based at least in part on said at least one default polarity setting; and

a differential driver coupled to said selection module and adapted to output a data signal having said at least one polarity.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said selection module comprises at least one multiplexer.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , comprising an inverter coupled to said at least one selection module.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , comprising:

at least one XAUI interface coupled to said at least one selection module; and

at least one optical PMD coupled to at least said differential driver.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , comprising:

a polarity override interface communicating with said at least one selection register and adapted to communicate an override signal thereto, wherein

said at least one selection register is adapted to, in response to said override signal, override said at least one default polarity setting with a different polarity setting stored in said at least one programming module.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said at least one program module is coupled to said selection register.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein said at least one program module comprises an EEPROM.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said PHY comprises:

a physical coding sublayer for encoding and decoding transmitted and received data; and

a physical medium dependent layer that transmits and receives said data.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , comprising:

a media access controller (MAC) coupled to said PHY by an XAUI interface and a management interface; and

an optical PMD coupled to said PHY by a PMD interface.

10. A transceiver, comprising:

at least one program module adapted to be programmed with at least one default polarity setting; and

a physical layer (PHY) comprising:

at least one selection register adapted to retrieve said at least one default polarity setting from at least said program module upon start up and store said at least one default polarity setting;

at least one selection module in communication with said at least one selection register and adapted to select at least one polarity from at least two possible polarities based at least in part on said at least one default polarity setting; and

a differential driver coupled to said selection module and adapted to output a data signal having said at least one polarity.

11. The transceiver of claim 10 , comprising at least one optical PMD communicating with said PHY.

12. The transceiver of claim 11 , comprising at least one PMD transmit and receive interface coupled to said optical PMD and said PHY.

13. The transceiver of claim 12 , wherein said PMD transmit and receive interface comprises a 10 Gigabit serial transmit differential interface and a 10 Gigabit serial receive differential interface.

14. The transceiver of claim 10 , wherein said at least one selection module comprises a multiplexer.

15. The transceiver of claim 10 , comprising an inverter coupled to said at least one selection module.

16. The transceiver of claim 10 , comprising at least one output interface coupled to at least said differential driver.

17. The transceiver of claim 10 , comprising:

a polarity override interface communicating with said at least one selection register and adapted to communicate an override signal thereto, wherein

said at least one selection register is adapted to, in response to said override signal, override said at least one default polarity setting with a different polarity setting stored in said at least one programming module.

18. A method of configuring a polarity for a transceiver module, comprising:

writing a default polarity setting into at least one programming module;

upon start up, storing said default polarity setting into at least one selection register on a physical layer (PHY); and

selecting a polarity from at least two possible polarities using at least said default polarity setting; and

outputting a signal having said polarity from said transceiver module with a differential driver.

19. The method of claim 18 , comprising, in response to an override signal, overriding said default polarity setting with a different polarity setting stored in said at least one programming module.

20. The method of claim 19 , comprising selecting said polarity from said at least two possible polarities using said different polarity setting.
