Abstract

A computer system which includes a CPU for performing various processes by program control and storage elements which store at least one operating system and a BIOS, wherein upon starting a system, the CPU recognizes the system's own hardware configuration, and starts a selected one operating system stored in the storage elements in accordance with the recognized hardware configuration under the control of the BIOS.

Claims (45)

1. A method, comprising:

starting, under control of a BIOS, a CPU of a computing system;

loading a first operating system;

storing, under control of the first operating system, an image of a second operating system in main memory;

determining the computing system is transitioning to a suspended state;

setting a flag in a register, wherein the flag indicates the computing system is transitioning to the suspended state; and

removing power from the computing system, except for power powering the main memory.

2. The method of claim 1 , further including creating, under control of the first operating system, a free memory area in the main memory, wherein the free memory area is not used by the first operating system, and the image of the second operating system is stored in the free memory area.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein creating the free memory area includes creating an Advance Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) table in the main memory.

4. The method of claim 3 , further including:

determining the computing system is transitioning to a hibernation state;

setting a second flag in a second register, wherein the second flag indicates the computing system is transitioning to the hibernation state;

storing the content of the main memory in the first computer data storage element; and

removing power to the computing system, including the main memory.

5. A computing system, comprising:

a central processing unit (CPU) in operative communication with a main memory,

wherein the CPU is configured to, upon starting under control of a BIOS:

load a first operating system;

store, under control of the first operating system, an image of a second operating system in the main memory;

determine the computing system is transitioning to a suspended state;

set a flag in a register, wherein the flag indicates the computing system is transitioning to the suspended state; and

remove power from the computing system, except for power powering the main memory.

6. The computing system of claim 5 , wherein the CPU is further configured to create, under control of the first operating system, a free memory area in the main memory, wherein the free memory area is not used by the first operating system, and the image of the second operating system is stored in the free memory area.

7. The computing system of claim 6 , wherein the CPU is further configured to create the free memory area by creating an Advance Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) table in the main memory.

8. The computing system of claim 7 , wherein the CPU is further configured to:

determine the computing system is transitioning to a hibernation state;

set a second flag in a second register, wherein the second flag indicates the computing system is transitioning to the hibernation state;

store the content of the main memory in the first computer data storage element; and

remove power to the computing system, including the main memory.

9. A program product comprising:

a computer readable medium; and

program instructions stored on said medium;

said program instructions, when executing on a computer system, cause the computer to, upon starting under control of a BIOS:

load a first operating system;

store, under control of the first operating system, an image of a second operating system in the main memory;

determine the computing system is transitioning to a suspended state;

set a flag in a register, wherein the flag indicates the computing system is transitioning to the suspended state; and

remove power from the computing system, except for power powering the main memory.

10. The program product of claim 9 , wherein said program instructions, when executing on the computer system, further cause the computer system to create, under control of the first operating system, a free memory area in the main memory, wherein the free memory area is not used by the first operating system, and the image of the second operating system is stored in the free memory area.

11. The program product of claim 10 , wherein said program instructions, when executing on the computer system, further cause the computer system to create the free memory area by creating an Advance Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) table in the main memory.

12. The program product of claim 11 , wherein said program instructions, when executing on the computer system, further cause the computer system to:

determine the computing system is transitioning to a hibernation state;

set a second flag in a second register, wherein the second flag indicates the computing system is transitioning to the hibernation state;

store the content of the main memory in the first computer data storage element; and

remove power to the computing system, including the main memory.
