Abstract

A new Rhenium alloy usable for improving the performance of emission filaments used in mass spectrometers or other similar scientific instruments, which is made by adding low level concentrations of Yttrium Oxide to Rhenium of less than 10%. This new alloy has demonstrated superior performance characteristics compared to pure Rhenium for this purpose. Filaments made from the Yttria/Rhenium alloy exhibit the same voltage, current and emission properties as Rhenium but have the added advantage of greatly decreasing warping during use. The Rhenium alloy filaments are usable with various shapes and configurations including straight filaments, multiple coiled filaments and pin shaped filaments. Electron microscopy and microscopy studies verify that the Yttria/Rhenium material of the new alloy has a smaller grain size and increased strength when compared to pure Rhenium, which accounts for the enhanced structural strength.

Claims (15)

2. A filament usable as an emission source in a scientific instrument as defined in claim 1 wherein where the yttrium oxide comprises from 0.01% to 10% volume percent of the final Rhenium and Yttrium oxide alloy.

3. A filament usable as an emission source in a scientific instrument as defined in claim 1 wherein said filament is shaped linearly straight.

4. A filament usable as an emission source in a scientific instrument as defined in claim 1 wherein said filament includes at least one coil shaped section.

5. A filament usable as an emission source in a scientific instrument as defined in claim 4 wherein said filament includes a plurality of individual coil shaped sections.

6. A filament usable as an emission source in a scientific instrument as defined in claim 5 wherein said plurality of individual coil shapes are configured electrically in parallel with respect to one another.

7. A filament usable as an emission source in a scientific instrument as defined in claim 1 wherein said filament is ribbon-shaped.

8. A filament usable as an emission source in a scientific instrument as defined in claim 1 wherein the alloy of Rhenium and Yttrium oxide is formed by homogenously mixing and fusing of a Yttrium oxide coated Rhenium powder to an overall average total concentration of Yttrium oxide ranging from 0.01% to 10% volume percent of the final Rhenium/Yttrium oxide alloy material.

9. A filament usable as an emission source in a scientific instrument as defined in claim 1 wherein the finally formed alloy of Rhenium and Yttrium oxide alloy has a finer grain structure than Rhenium to enhance rigidity, strength and creep resistance thereof.

10. A filament usable as an emission source for the production of electron beams in a scientific instrument wherein the filament is formed from an alloy of Rhenium and Yttrium oxide wherein the Yttrium oxide comprises from 0.01% to 10% volume percent of the final alloy.

11. A filament usable as an emission source for the production of a focused energy beam in a scientific instrument wherein the filament is formed from an alloy of Rhenium and Yttrium oxide wherein the Yttrium oxide comprises from 0.01% to 10% volume percent of the final alloy.

12. A filament usable as an emission source in a scientific instrument wherein the filament is formed from an alloy of Rhenium including Yttrium oxide where the yttrium oxide comprises from 0.01% to 10% volume percent of the final alloy, said formed alloy of Rhenium and Yttrium oxide being formed by homogeneously mixing and fusing a Yttrium oxide coated Rhenium powder to an overall average total concentration of Yttrium oxide ranging from 0.01% to 10% volume percent of the final Rhenium/Yttrium oxide alloy material and wherein said formed alloy of Rhenium and Yttrium oxide alloy has a finer grain structure than Rhenium to enhance rigidity, strength and creep resistance thereof.
