Abstract

Provided are methods and systems of managing vertical handoffs in a wireless communication network. Embodiments include analyzing wireless device usage to determine usage patterns, which may include locations and times at which the wireless device is typically accessing the network. The network may recognize points in the usage patterns at which signal quality parameters are typically reduced. Such reductions in signal quality parameters may lead to inefficient vertical handoffs. The network may decrease adverse effects of inefficient vertical handoffs by reducing ping ponging, selecting links between wireless devices and network nodes, or indicating to a user of the wireless device that delays and/or data loss may occur.

Claims (28)

1. A method of managing a communication in a wireless communication network, the method comprising:

analyzing a usage pattern of a wireless device in the wireless communication network over a period of time, utilizing a processor coupled to the wireless communication network;

monitoring, as it occurs, an actual communication path of the wireless device in the wireless communication network;

generating a predicted communication path in the wireless communication network for managing vertical handoffs between nodes in the wireless communication network for the wireless device in the actual communication path, wherein the predicted communication path is based on a use time and location of mobile device in the actual communication path and as a historical daily usage pattern of the wireless device;

predicting a decreased signal quality segment in a link in the predicted communication path in the wireless communication network based on the usage pattern, utilizing the processor, wherein the predicted decreased signal quality segment comprises one or more of a location estimate and a time estimate of the usage pattern of the wireless device; and

controlling a vertical handoff of the wireless device in the actual communication path based on the predicted decreased signal quality segment, utilizing the processor, such that the actual communication path differs from the predicted communication path by avoiding the decreased signal quality segment.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wireless communication network comprises a plurality of access technologies.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the usage pattern comprises one or more of a time estimate and location estimate corresponding to a time and a location of access by the wireless device to the wireless communication network.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the link decreases or oscillates in one or more signal quality parameters during the decreased signal quality segment.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the signal quality parameters comprise at least one of signal strength, SNR, SNI, SNIR, SINAD, or BER.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein controlling the vertical handoff comprises reducing ping ponging.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein controlling the vertical handoff comprises selecting a selected link in the wireless communication network prior to the predicted decreased signal quality segment.

8. The method of claim 1 , comprising indicating the predicted decreased signal quality segment to a user prior to the predicted decreased signal quality segment.

9. The method of claim 1 , comprising controlling the vertical handoff based on a cost associated with selecting a link in the wireless communication network, utilizing the processor.

10. The method of claim 1 , comprising controlling the vertical handoff based on a quality of service control mechanism, utilizing the processor.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein controlling the vertical handoff comprises performing the vertical handoff before the predicted decreased quality segment.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein controlling the vertical handoff comprises preloading data prior to the vertical handoff.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein controlling the vertical handoff comprises selecting a communication link based on a type of user communication.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein controlling the vertical handoff comprises selecting a communication link based on preset acceptable link cost boundaries.

15. A method of managing a vertical handoff for a communication in a network, the method comprising:

determining a predicted communication path of a wireless device in a network based on historical usage patterns of the wireless device, wherein the predicted communication path comprises a pattern of locations and estimates of time units between locations in the pattern of locations as well as predicted network nodes to which the wireless device is connected in the predicted communication path that correspond to the locations;

determining a point in the predicted path where inefficient vertical handoffs are likely, using a processor coupled to the network, wherein the point comprises a time estimate and a location estimate;

preloading data related to a communication prior to the point, and warning a user of the wireless device prior to the point, using the processor;

assessing that a signal quality of the wireless device when in use at a time and location corresponding to the point is below a threshold; and

performing a vertical handoff for the wireless device at the time and location corresponding to the point.

16. The method of claim 15 , comprising reducing a cost of the vertical handoff by selecting the link between the wireless device and the network node based on the cost of the link, using the processor.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein reducing the cost of the vertical handoff comprises selecting the link based on a signal quality of the link and a type of the communication, using the processor.

18. The method of claim 15 , comprising enabling a user of the wireless device to customize vertical handoffs.
