Abstract

An instrument for use in minimally invasive hip surgery, the instrument being for use in forming and using a portal incision in a hip arthroplasty procedure to implant an acetabular implant. In particular, the instrument is useful for both alignment and insertion/impaction of an acetabular shell. Furthermore, the instrument is suitable for assuring the shell is impacted with the proper abduction and version in left or right hips.

Claims (25)

1. An instrument for use in forming and using a portal incision in a hip arthroplasty procedure to implant an acetabular implant, comprising:

a main body, a handle on an upper end of said main body, said main body including a lengthwise straight portion extending to a lower end of said main body,

an angled sleeve member fixedly formed on said lower end of said main body, said angled sleeve member having a sleeve bore therethrough,

said handle positioned on said main body such that a position of said handle indicates that the main body is in a proper position,

an arm, said arm having a straight first arm portion and a straight second arm portion extending contiguously from said first arm portion, said first arm portion extending perpendicularly from said main body below said handle, said second arm portion downwardly angled from said first arm portion,

a guide ring fixedly formed on an end of said second arm portion, said guide ring having a guide bore therethrough, and said guide bore axially aligned with said sleeve bore of said angled sleeve member to thereby guide a trocar or an impactor through said guide bore and into alignment with said sleeve bore,

wherein said handle is a rotatable handle, wherein when said rotatable handle is rotated to a first position, the instrument may be used with left hips and when said rotatable handle is rotated to a second position, the instrument may be used with right hips,

wherein rotation of said rotatable handle between said first and said second positions is accomplished by untightening a tightening member to thereby release said rotatable handle, re-positioning said rotatable handle to a different one of said first and said second positions, and re-tightening said tightening member to thereby secure said rotatable handle in said different one of said first and said second positions,

wherein an attachment end of said first arm portion has a threaded member rotatably disposed therein and extending therefrom, and said main body has a threaded bore, said threaded bore configured to receive said threaded member of said first arm portion for use in attaching said arm to said main body, and

wherein said attachment end of said first arm portion further includes a pair of guidance pins extending therefrom on opposing sides of said threaded member, and said main body has a pair of pin bores, said pin bores sized and positioned to receive said guidance pins for use in attaching said arm to said main body.

2. The instrument of claim 1 , wherein when said handle is perpendicular or parallel to an edge of an operating room table, the instrument will impact an acetabular shell with a proper version.

3. The instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a thumb wheel on said threaded member of said first arm portion for use in threading said threaded member into said threaded bore.

4. The instrument of claim 3 , wherein when said handle is perpendicular or parallel to an edge of an operating room table, the instrument will impact an acetabular shell with a proper version.

5. The instrument of claim 1 , wherein said first arm portion of said arm is removably attached to said main body.

6. An instrument for use in forming and using a portal incision in a hip arthroplasty procedure to implant an acetabular implant, comprising:

a main body, a handle on an upper end of said main body, said main body including a lengthwise straight portion extending to a lower end of said main body,

an angled sleeve member fixedly formed on said lower end of said main body, said angled sleeve member having a sleeve bore therethrough,

said handle positioned on said main body such that a position of said handle indicates that the main body is in a proper position,

an arm, said arm having a straight first arm portion and a straight second arm portion extending contiguously from said first arm portion, said first arm portion extending perpendicularly from said main body below said handle, said second arm portion downwardly angled from said first arm portion,

a guide ring fixedly formed on an end of said second arm portion, said guide ring having a guide bore therethrough, and said guide bore axially aligned with said sleeve bore of said angled sleeve member to thereby guide a trocar or an impactor through said guide bore and into alignment with said sleeve bore,

wherein an attachment end of said first arm portion has a threaded member rotatably disposed therein and extending therefrom, and said main body has a threaded bore, said threaded bore configured to receive said threaded member of said first arm portion for use in attaching said arm to said main body, and

wherein said attachment end of said first arm portion further includes a pair of guidance pins extending therefrom on opposing sides of said threaded member, and said main body has a pair of pin bores, said pin bores sized and positioned to receive said guidance pins for use in attaching said arm to said main body.

7. The instrument of claim 6 , further comprising a thumb wheel on said threaded member of said first arm portion for use in threading said threaded member into said threaded bore.

8. The instrument of claim 6 , wherein when said handle is perpendicular or parallel to an edge of an operating room table, the instrument will impact an acetabular shell with a proper version.

9. The instrument of claim 7 , wherein when said handle is perpendicular or parallel to an edge of an operating room table, the instrument will impact an acetabular shell with a proper version.
