Abstract

A method for forming an enhanced image of tooth tissue for caries detection obtains fluorescence and reflectance image data from a tooth. Each pixel in the fluorescence image data is combined with its corresponding pixel in the reflectance image data by subtracting an offset to the reflectance image data value to generate an offset reflectance image data value, and then computing an enhanced image data value according to the difference between the fluorescence image data value and the offset reflectance image data value, whereby the enhanced image is formed from the resulting pixel array of enhanced image data values.

Claims (34)

1. A method for forming an enhanced image of a tooth comprising:

obtaining fluorescence image data having a distribution from the tooth by: directing first incident light toward the tooth, and sensing fluorescent emission from the tooth;

obtaining reflectance image data having a distribution from the tooth by: directing second incident light toward the tooth, and sensing back-scattered reflectance light from the tooth; and

combining each pixel in the fluorescence image data with its corresponding pixel in the reflectance image data by: subtracting an offset to the reflectance image data value to generate an offset reflectance image data value, wherein the offset approximates a difference in intensity between the fluorescence image data distribution and the reflectance image data distribution and computing an enhanced image data value according to a difference between the fluorescence image data value and the offset reflectance image data value, whereby the enhanced image is formed from a resulting pixel array of enhanced image data values, wherein the enhanced image of the tooth includes a contrast between a caries region and a normal region of the tooth.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying the enhanced image of the tooth.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the incident light includes wavelengths between about 300 and 500 nm.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein obtaining the fluorescence image data comprises using a green filter.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein obtaining the reflectance image data comprises using a blue filter.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein obtaining the reflectance image data comprises using a camera.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the camera is a color camera.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the fluorescence image data and reflectance image data are obtained from different color planes of a single, full-color image capture.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the fluorescence image data and reflectance image data are obtained from separate image captures.

10. The method of claim 2 wherein the display of the enhanced image has a non-gray color tint.

11. The method of claim 2 wherein the display of the enhanced image has a green color tint.

12. The method of claim 2 wherein displaying the enhanced image of the tooth tissue comprises simultaneously displaying an image of the tooth obtained using a polychromatic light source.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein directing incident light toward the tooth comprises energizing a light source taken from the group consisting of a laser, an LED, and a lamp.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein obtaining a reflectance image comprises directing a polychromatic incident light toward the tooth.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the reflectance image data are obtained from a color plane of a white light image.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein a single light source provides the first and second incident light.

17. The method of claim 1 wherein different light sources provide the first and second incident light.

18. A method for forming an enhanced image of a tooth tissue comprising:

obtaining fluorescence image data from a tooth by: directing a first incident light toward the tooth, and sensing fluorescent emission from the tooth;

obtaining reflectance image data from the tooth by: directing a second incident light toward the tooth, and sensing reflected light from the tooth, wherein an illuminance of the first incident light exceeds an illuminance of the second incident light; and

combining each pixel in the fluorescence image data with its corresponding pixel in the reflectance image data to compute an enhanced image data value according to a difference between the fluorescence image data value and the reflectance image data value, whereby the enhanced image is formed from a resulting pixel array of enhanced image data values, wherein the enhanced image of the tooth includes a contrast between a caries region and a normal region of the tooth.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein the second incident light is from a polychromatic light source.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein the first incident light includes wavelengths between about 300 and 500 nm.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein an illuminance of the first incident light exceeds an illuminance of the second incident light.

22. The method of claim 1 , wherein the distribution of the reflectance image data is different for the normal region than the caries region of the tooth.

23. A method for forming an enhanced image of a tooth comprising:

obtaining fluorescence image data from the tooth;

obtaining back-scattered reflectance image data from the tooth;

subtracting an offset to a reflectance image data value from the back-scattered reflectance image data to generate an offset reflectance image data value, wherein the offset approximates a difference in intensity between a fluorescence image data distribution and a back-scattered reflectance image data distribution; and

computing an enhanced image data value according to a difference between a fluorescence image data value and the offset reflectance image data value, whereby the enhanced image is formed from a resulting pixel array of enhanced image data values.

24. The method of claim 23 , wherein an illuminance of the first incident light exceeds an illuminance of the second incident light.
