Abstract

Acoustic energy is used to control motion in a fluid. According to one embodiment, the invention directs acoustic energy at selected naturally occurring nucleation features to control motion in the fluid. In another embodiment, the invention provides focussed or unfocussed acoustic energy to selectively placed nucleation features to control fluid motion. According to one embodiment, the invention includes an acoustic source, a controller for controlling operation of the acoustic source, and one or more nucleation features located proximate to or in the fluid to be controlled.

Claims (26)

1. A method of imparting motion to a fluid, said method comprising:

providing a focused acoustic field having a frequency range of between about 100 kHz and about 100 MHz and having a focal zone having a width of less than about 2 centimeters, the focused acoustic field originating from an acoustic source spaced from and exterior to a vessel;

holding a liquid medium in a medium container, the liquid medium for transmitting acoustic energy from the acoustic source to the vessel, and the vessel having a nucleation feature;

holding one or more samples in the vessel and holding the vessel in a vessel holder, the vessel holder adapted to position the vessel in the medium container at a location at least partially in the focal zone of the acoustic source; and

selectively positioning the nucleation feature adapted to interact with said focused acoustic field to impart motion to fluid in the vessel.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of selectively positioning further comprises placing the nucleation feature into the vessel.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of placing the nucleation feature into the vessel comprises inserting the nucleation feature into the vessel prior to fluid being contained in the vessel.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of placing the nucleation feature into the vessel comprises inserting the nucleation feature into the vessel after the vessel is partially filled with fluid.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of placing the nucleation feature into the vessel comprises affixing the nucleation feature inside the vessel.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of placing the nucleation feature into the vessel comprises placing a microsphere into the vessel.

7. The method of claim 2 , further comprising placing an element that carries the nucleation feature in the vessel.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the element carrying the nucleation feature includes a membrane or a microsphere.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing a focused acoustic field having a focal zone having a width of less than about 2 centimeters comprises providing a focused acoustic field having a focal zone having a width of less than about 1 centimeter.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sealing the one or more samples in the vessel.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing a plurality of focal zones, each focal zone having a width of less than about 2 centimeters.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising positioning the vessel to selectively expose the one or more samples to the focused acoustic field.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nucleation feature comprises a characteristic size ranging between about 5 microns and about 10 microns.

14. The method of claim 1 ,wherein the nucleation feature comprises a size and a geometry so as to promote formation of gas cavities within a fluid, the gas cavities having a volume between about 1 pL and about 3 mL.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nucleation feature includes at least one of a pit, crevice, scratch, groove and ridge in a first surface.

16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing a focused acoustic field having a line focal zone.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the width includes a diameter of the focal zone.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the acoustic source is spaced from and exterior to a plurality of vessels.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein selectively positioning the nucleation feature comprises operating a positioning system to move the nucleation feature relative to the focused acoustic field.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein selectively positioning the nucleation feature comprises maintaining the vessel to be at a stationary position relative to the focused acoustic field.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein selectively positioning the nucleation feature comprises selectively placing the nucleation feature at a location of the vessel so as to impart motion to fluid in the vessel at the location upon interacting with said focused acoustic field.

22. The method of claim 1 , wherein selectively positioning the nucleation feature comprises placing the nucleation feature at a desired location in the vessel.
