Abstract

A method and apparatus for auditing mobile services delivery to provide a coherent, path-based awareness of the quality level of the mobile services and the corresponding underlying transport elements supporting each service or path. In various embodiments, service or connection audits triggered within a network such as a 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless network result in the execution of one or more test sequences adapted to provide service, connection or other information pertaining to the network or the supported mobile services.

Claims (57)

1. A method for auditing a network comprising a plurality of network elements and communications links adapted to support a plurality of services, the method comprising:

using at least one processor for:

receiving an audit trigger associated with one or more Evolved Packet System (EPS)-related paths, the audit trigger having associated with it at least one of a starting point and a task, the starting point indicative of an initial network element or communication link, the task indicative of one or more audit tasks to be performed;

executing one or more test sequences in response to the audit trigger; and

storing, in a computer readable storage medium, data representing at least a portion of the results of the one or more executed test sequences.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the audit trigger comprises one or more of a predetermined audit schedule, an indication of a network error condition, an indication of a service error condition and a command generated by a network manager.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the audit trigger comprises an indication of a network error condition, the audit trigger having associated with it a starting point proximate a source of the network error condition and a task adapted to the type of network error condition indicated.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the audit trigger comprises a predetermined audit schedule, the audit trigger having associated with it a task adapted to gather status information from a defined group of network elements and communications links.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein:

the defined group of network elements and communications links comprises the network elements and communications links necessary to support one or more paths of interest.

The method of claim 5 , wherein the one or more paths of interest comprise paths providing a specific type of service, paths servicing a specific user, paths associated with a specific group of users, paths associated with a specific application provider and paths associated with a specific geographic area.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the test sequences comprise one or more of a gathering of status information, a gathering of error information, a stressing of a network element or portion thereof and a stressing of a communications link or portion thereof.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

reprovisioning each of a plurality of services in response to test sequence results indicative of a QoS level below a threshold level.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

reprovisioning each of a plurality of services in response to test sequence results indicative of a QoS level trend indicative of an insufficient QoS level.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the audit trigger is associated with a plurality of network elements and communications links supporting an EPS-related path, the one or more test sequences adapted to retrieve status information indicative of a Quality of Service (QoS) level associated with the EPS-related path.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

retrieving data indicative of network elements and communications links supporting at least one EPS-related path of interest; and

adapting the one or more test sequences to the at least one EPS-related path of interest.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the test sequences are executed sequentially according to the order of each network element portion and communications link portion supporting the EPS-related path.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the test sequence executed for each portion of a network element or communications link is adapted in response to the results of a prior executed test sequence.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the audit trigger is associated with a plurality of network elements and communications links supporting a specific group of services, the one or more test sequences being adapted to retrieve status information indicative of a Quality of Service (QoS) level associated with the group of services.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein each service within the specific group of services is supported by the same starting point.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computer readable storage medium comprises a database for storing data associated each of a plurality of executed audit tasks.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein a network manager is further associated with a database for storing information identifying each of the network element and communications link portions supporting each EPS-related path.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is performed using an audit tool within a network management system (NMS).

19. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating trend information using statistics associated with each of a plurality of network audits.

20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising:

reprovisioning an EPS-related path in response to trend information associated with network element and communications link portions supporting the EPS-related path.

The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of services comprises a mobile service, each mobile service comprising a first endpoint in service communication with a second endpoint via at least one connector component and at least one network element component, each of the endpoints, at least one connector component and at least one network element component comprising a necessary element supporting the mobile service.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein at least one network element comprises an instance of an EPS on a network element.

23. The method of claim 21 , wherein:

the executed test sequence is adapted to gather statistical data associated with each of the necessary elements supporting the mobile service; the method further comprising:

determining, using the gathered statistical data, whether one or more of the necessary elements supporting the mobile service has failed, degraded or become oversubscribed.

24. The method of claim 21 , wherein:

the executed test sequence is adapted to gather statistical data associated with each of the necessary elements supporting the mobile service; the method further comprising:

determining, using the gathered statistical data, whether one or more of the necessary elements supporting the mobile service is trending toward failure, degradation or become oversubscribed.

25. The method of claim 21 , wherein audit of a mobile service is performed using an audit tool within a network management system (NMS).

26. The method of claim 21 , wherein:

each of a plurality of mobile services having a common mobile service parameter are bundled together to form a mobile service group;

the executed test sequence is adapted to gather statistical data associated with each of the necessary elements supporting the mobile service group; the method further comprising:

determining, using the gathered statistical data, whether one or more of the necessary elements supporting the mobile service group has failed, degraded or become oversubscribed.

27. The method of claim 26 , wherein the common mobile service parameter comprises one or more of a common necessary element, a common service type, a common user type, a common quality of service (QoS), a common service provider and a common Access Point Name (APN).

28. The method of claim 26 , wherein the common mobile service parameter comprises one or more of a common eNodeB, a common Serving Gateway (SOW) and a common Packet Data Network (PDN) Gateway (PGW).

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing computer instructions which, when processed by a computer, cause the computer to perform a method for auditing a network comprising a plurality of network elements and communications links adapted to support a plurality of services, the method comprising:

receiving an audit trigger associated with one or more Evolved Packet System (EPS)-related paths, the audit trigger having associated with it at least one of a starting point and a task, the starting point indicative of an initial network element or communication link, the task indicative of one or more audit tasks to be performed;

executing one or more test sequences in response to the audit trigger;

storing, in a computer readable storage medium, data representing at least a portion of the results of the one or more executed test sequences.

30. Apparatus for managing a network comprising a plurality of network elements and communications links adapted to support a plurality of services, comprising:

a processor and a memory communicatively coupled to the processor, the processor configured to:

receive an audit trigger associated with one or more Evolved Packet System (EPS)-related paths, the audit trigger having associated with it at least one of a starting point and a task, the starting point indicative of an initial network element or communication link, the task indicative of one or more audit tasks to be performed;

execute one or more test sequences in response to the audit trigger; and

store, in a computer readable storage medium, data representing at least a portion of the results of the one or more executed test sequences.
