Abstract

A prosthetic knee provides a single axis of rotation and includes a hydraulic damping cylinder, a microprocessor, and sensors. Based on input from the sensors, the microprocessor selects a flow path within the hydraulic cylinder in order to provide the proper amount of knee resistance to bending for a given situation. The resistance of each flow path within the hydraulic cylinder is manually preset. Changes in gait speed are accommodated by employing a hydraulic damper with intelligently designed position sensitive damping. Moreover, the knee need not be un-weighted to transition from the stance phase to the swing phase of gait. As a result, the knee safely provides a natural, energy efficient gait over a range of terrains and gait speeds and is simpler, less costly, and lighter weight than the prior art.

Claims (14)

1. A prosthetic knee for use during a walking gait including a stance phase and a swing phase, the prosthetic knee comprising:

a frame;

a rotor connected to the frame providing at least one axis of rotation about the prosthetic knee; and

a hydraulic damping cylinder used by the rotor, wherein the hydraulic damping cylinder includes:

a stance flexion resistance flow path used during flexion of the prosthetic knee in the stance phase;

a swing flexion resistance flow path used during flexion of the prosthetic knee in the swing phase, wherein the swing flexion resistance flow path is distinct from the stance flexion resistance flow path; and

a pressure sensitive valve located only in the swing flexion resistance flow path to provide facilitate progressive damping during flexion of the prosthetic knee in the swing phase.

2. The prosthetic knee of claim 1 , wherein during flexion of the prosthetic knee in the swing phase, the pressure sensitive valve progressively increases damping from about 30 degrees to about 60 degrees of flexion of the prosthetic knee, and

wherein resistance from the pressure sensitive valve causes flexion of the prosthetic knee to stop at about 60 degrees.

3. The prosthetic knee of claim 1 , wherein the pressure sensitive valve includes a gas chamber to provide progressive damping.

4. The prosthetic knee of claim 1 , wherein the hydraulic damping cylinder provides position sensitive damping.

5. The prosthetic knee of claim 1 , wherein the hydraulic damping cylinder further comprises an extension resistance flow path used during extension of the prosthetic knee in the swing phase, and wherein the extension resistance flow path is distinct from the stance flexion resistance flow path and the swing flexion resistance flow path.

6. The prosthetic knee of claim 1 , wherein the extension resistance flow path includes a needle valve with a shim stack for providing resistance during extension of the prosthetic knee in the swing phase.

7. The prosthetic knee of claim 1 , wherein the stance flexion resistance path includes a needle valve for providing resistance during flexion of the prosthetic knee in the stance phase.
