Abstract

A wood composite material comprises wood strands disposed in surface layers and one or more core layers, wherein about 70 wt % to about 98 wt % of the wood strands of the first and second surface layers are comprised of a wood species that has a density greater than a density of a wood species from which about 70 wt % to about 98 wt % of the strands in the one or more core layers are stranded.

Claims (26)

1. A wood composite material comprising:

wood strands disposed in first and second surface layers and one or more core layers, wherein about 70 wt % to about 98 wt % of the wood strands of the first and second surface layers are comprised of a wood species that has a density greater than a density of a wood species from which about 70 wt % to about 98 wt % of the strands in the one or more core layers are stranded.

2. The wood composite material according to claim 1 , wherein the wood composite material is a board having a density of about 20 lbs/ft 3 to about 60 lbs/ft 3 .

3. The wood composite material according to claim 1 , wherein the strands in the one or more surface layers are selected from the group consisting of oak species, hickory species, pine species, aspen species, and other hardwood and softwood species.

4. The wood composite material according to claim 3 , wherein the strands in the one or more core layers are selected from the group consisting of loblolly pine and paulownia wood.

5. The wood composite material according to claim 1 , wherein the wood composite material is in the form of an oriented strand board.

6. The wood composite material according to claim 1 , wherein the wood composite material comprises from about 1 wt % to about 20 wt % of polymeric binders.

7. The wood composite material according to claim 5 , wherein the wood composite board has a density of about 20 lbs/ft 3 to about 40 lbs/ft 3 .

8. A wood composite board, comprising:

upper and lower surface layers, wherein the upper and lower surface layers each comprise about 70 wt % to about 98 wt % of wood strands from a first wood species; and

a core layer between the upper and lower surface layers, wherein the core layer comprises about 70 wt % to about 98 wt % of wood strands from a second wood species that is different than the first wood species,

wherein the first wood species has a density that is greater than a density of the second wood species.

9. The wood composite board of claim 8 , wherein the about 70 wt % to about 98 wt % of wood strands of the upper and lower surface layers are selected from the group consisting of iron wood, oak wood, natural short leaf pine wood, and hickory wood.

10. The wood composite board of claim 8 , wherein the about 70 wt % to about 98 wt % of wood strands of the core layer are selected from the group consisting of loblolly pine wood and paulownia wood.

11. The wood composite board of claim 8 , wherein the board has a density a density of about 20 lbs/ft 3 to about 60 lbs/ft 3 .

12. The wood composite board of claim 8 , wherein the board has a thickness of about 0.25 inches to about 4 inches.

13. The wood composite board of claim 8 , wherein the wood strands of the upper, lower, and core layers generally all have lengths of at least about one to about six inches, widths of at least about 0.3 inches, and thicknesses no more than about 0.25 inches.

14. The wood composite board according to claim 8 , wherein the wood composite board comprises from about 1 wt % to about 20 wt % of polymeric binders.

15. A wood composite board, comprising:

upper and lower surface layers, wherein the upper and lower surface layers each comprise about 70 wt % to about 98 wt % of wood strands selected from the group consisting of hickory, oak, short leaf pine, and ironwood; and

a core layer between the upper and lower surface layers, wherein the core layer comprises about 70 wt % to about 98 wt % of wood strands selected from the group consisting of paulownia wood and loblolly pine, wherein the strands of each layer are bonded together with polymeric resin.

16. The wood composite board of claim 15 , wherein the wood strands of the upper, lower, and core layers generally all have lengths of at least two inches, widths of at least 0.3 inches, and thicknesses no more than 0.25 inches.

17. The wood composite board of claim 15 , wherein the board has a density a density of about 20 lbs/ft 3 to about 60 lbs/ft 3 .

18. The wood composite board of claim 17 , wherein the board has a thickness of about 0.25 inches to about 4 inches.

19. The wood composite board of claim 15 , wherein the wood strands of the upper and lower layers comprise natural short leaf pine, wherein the wood strands of the core layer comprise loblolly pine, and wherein the wood strands of the upper, lower, and core layers generally all have lengths of one to six inches, widths of 0.25 to 4 inches 0.3 inches, and thicknesses of about 0.025 inches.

20. The wood composite board of claim 19 , wherein all strands of the upper, lower and core layers are oriented in the same direction.
