Abstract

Spectrum asset class determination is dynamically assessed so that a radio device may use a more preferred one of licensed spectrum or unlicensed spectrum for the specific wireless communications application of the radio device. Licensed spectrum, in addition to unlicensed spectrum, may be made available to preferred radio devices by validating that the radio system has an equipment ID and a secondary ID that authorizes the use of the licensed spectrum by the radio system.

Claims (35)

1. A method of supporting a wireless communications application of a radio system, comprising:

establishing spectrum class determination criteria for the wireless communication application, each spectrum class determination criterion biased between one of licensed spectrum and unlicensed spectrum;

determining between one of licensed spectrum and unlicensed spectrum for use for the wireless communications application by collectively evaluating the spectrum class determination criteria; and

requesting access to the determined one of licensed spectrum or unlicensed spectrum type from a spectrum management system.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein each determination criterion has a value.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the collective evaluation is carried out by combining the values and comparing a result of the combination against a predetermined threshold.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein if a single determination criterion has a value that crosses a predetermined threshold for the single determination criterion, then the determining is made based on the bias of the single determination to use licensed or unlicensed spectrum criterion.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the unlicensed spectrum is TV White Spaces.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the licensed spectrum corresponds to lower power television stations.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the determination criteria are selected from two or more criterion chosen from bandwidth to support the wireless communications application, quality of service to support the wireless communications application, criticality of the wireless communications application, range to support the wireless communications application, unlicensed spectrum congestion, cost of available licensed spectrum, and time availability of available licensed spectrum.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein when the determination is to use unlicensed spectrum for the wireless communications application, the requesting is in the form of transmitting a request for a TV white spaces channel map to the spectrum management system.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein a response to the request is received from the spectrum management system in the form of a channel map that contains both licensed and unlicensed spectrum.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein when the determination is to use licensed spectrum for the wireless communications application, the radio system seeks access to the licensed spectrum from a spectrum allocation system.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the spectrum allocation system is an automated spectrum exchange.

12. A spectrum class determination device for supporting a wireless communications application of a radio system, comprising a processor configured to establish spectrum class determination criteria for the wireless communication application, each spectrum class determination criterion biased between one of licensed spectrum and unlicensed spectrum, determine between licensed spectrum and unlicensed spectrum for use for the wireless communications application by collective evaluation of the spectrum class determination criteria, and request access to the determined one of licensed spectrum or unlicensed spectrum type from a spectrum management system.

13. The spectrum class determination device of claim 12 , wherein the spectrum class determination device is part of the radio system.

14. The spectrum class determination device of claim 12 , wherein the spectrum class determination device communicates with the radio system through a network.

15. The spectrum class determination device of claim 14 , wherein the spectrum class determination device generates a channel map for the radio system.

16. The spectrum class determination device of claim 12 , wherein the spectrum class determination device accesses at least one spectrum database that provides spectrum-related data used to establish at least one of the determination criteria.

17. The spectrum class determination device of claim 12 , wherein the database is stored by the spectrum class determination device.

18. The spectrum class determination device of claim 12 , wherein each determination criterion has a value.

19. The spectrum class determination device of claim 18 , wherein the collective evaluation is carried out by combining the values and comparing a result of the combination against a predetermined threshold.

20. The spectrum class determination device of claim 18 , wherein if a single determination criterion has a value that crosses a predetermined threshold for the single determination criterion, then the determination is made based on the bias of the single determination criterion.

21. The spectrum class determination device of claim 12 , wherein the unlicensed spectrum is TV White Spaces.

22. The spectrum class determination device of claim 21 , wherein the licensed spectrum corresponds to low power television stations.

The spectrum class determination device of claim 12 , wherein the determination criteria are selected from two or more criterion chosen from bandwidth to support the wireless communications application, quality of service to support the wireless communications application, criticality of the wireless communications application, range to support the wireless communications application, unlicensed spectrum congestion, cost of available licensed spectrum, and time availability of available licensed spectrum.

24. The spectrum class determination device of claim 12 , wherein when the determination is to use unlicensed spectrum for the wireless communications application, the request is in the form of transmitting a request for a TV white spaces channel map to the spectrum management system.

25. The spectrum class determination device of claim 24 , wherein a response to the request is received from the spectrum management system in the form of a channel map that contains both licensed and unlicensed spectrum.

26. The spectrum class determination device of claim 12 , wherein when the determination is to use licensed spectrum for the wireless communications application, the radio system seeks access to the licensed spectrum from a spectrum allocation system.

27. The spectrum class determination device of claim 26 , wherein the spectrum allocation system is an automated spectrum exchange.

28. A method of supporting a wireless communications application of a radio system, comprising:

establishing spectrum class determination criteria for the wireless communication application,

making an inquiry to a user of the radio system by presenting the spectrum class determination criteria in terms of both operational performance for unlicensed spectrum and operational performance for licensed spectrum to the user for evaluation, and

determining between one of licensed spectrum and unlicensed spectrum for use for the wireless communications application from user input that is received in response to the presenting.

29. The method of claim 28 , wherein the operational performance for unlicensed spectrum and the operational performance for licensed spectrum are specified in respective amounts of time.
