Abstract

Disclosed is an optimized process and apparatus for more efficiently and economically carrying out the liquid-phase oxidation of an oxidizable compound. Such liquid-phase oxidation is carried out in a bubble column reactor that provides for a highly efficient reaction at relatively low temperatures. When the oxidized compound is para-xylene and the product from the oxidation reaction is crude terephthalic acid (CTA), such CTA product can be purified and separated by more economical techniques than could be employed if the CTA were formed by a conventional high-temperature oxidation process.

Claims (39)

1. In a bubble column reactor for contacting a predominately liquid-phase stream and a predominately gas-phase stream, the improvement comprising:

a vessel shell defining a reaction zone;

a vessel outlet at a lower part of the reaction zone, for removal of substantially deaerated product slurry from the reactor for further processing; and

a deaeration vessel coupled in fluid flow communication with said vessel outlet;

wherein

said deaeration vessel comprises

an upper inlet,

a lower outlet,

one or more upright sidewalls defining an internal deaeration zone having a horizontal cross-sectional area in fluid flow communication with said upper inlet and said lower outlet,

said lower deaeration vessel outlet is in fluid flow communication with said vessel outlet at the lower part of the reaction zone or in fluid flow communication with a conduit from said vessel outlet at the lower part of the reaction zone, and

wherein a maximum horizontal cross-sectional area of said internal deaeration zone is less than about 25 percent of a maximum horizontal cross-sectional area of said reaction zone.

2. The bubble column reactor of claim 1 wherein the maximum horizontal cross-sectional area of said deaeration zone is in the range of from about 0.1 to about 10 percent of the maximum horizontal cross-sectional area of said reaction zone.

3. The bubble column reactor of claim 1 wherein the volume of said deaeration zone is less than about 5 percent of the volume of said reaction zone.

4. The bubble column reactor of claim 1 wherein said deaeration zone has a maximum diameter in the range of from about 0.2 to about 2 meters and a maximum height in the range of from about 0.3 to about 5 meters.

5. The bubble column reactor of claim 1 wherein said deaeration zone has a substantially constant horizontal cross-sectional area.

6. The bubble column reactor of claim 5 wherein said deaeration zone is substantially cylindrical in shape.

7. The bubble column reactor of claim 1 wherein said reaction zone has a maximum length (L), a maximum diameter (D), and an L:D ratio in the range of from about 6:1 to about 30:1.

8. The bubble column reactor of claim 7 wherein said L is in the range of from about 20 to about 75 meters, said D is in the range of from about 2 to about 10 meters, and said L:D is in the range of from about 8:1 to about 20:1.

9. The bubble column reactor of claim 7 wherein said reaction zone presents a normally-lower end and a normally-upper end spaced from one another by said length (L), wherein said vessel outlet is spaced at least about 1D from said normally-lower end of said reaction zone.

10. The bubble column reactor of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of said deaeration zone is located in said vessel shell.

11. The bubble column reactor of claim 1 wherein all of said deaeration zone is located outside of said vessel shell.

12. In a bubble column reactor for contacting a predominately liquid-phase stream and a predominately gas-phase stream, the improvement comprising:

a vessel shell defining a reaction zone:

a vessel outlet for removal of substantially deaerated product slurry from the reactor for further processing at a lower part of the reaction zone,

wherein said reaction zone has a maximum length (L), a maximum diameter (D), and an L:D ratio in the range of from about 6:1 to about 30:1; and

a deaeration vessel coupled in fluid flow communication with said vessel outlet,

wherein

said deaeration vessel comprises:

an upper inlet,

a lower outlet,

one or more upright sidewalls defining an internal deaeration zone having a horizontal cross-sectional area in fluid flow communication with said upper inlet and said lower outlet, wherein the maximum horizontal cross-sectional area of said deaeration zone is in the range of from about 0.1 to about 10 percent of the maximum horizontal cross-sectional area of said reaction zone.

13. The bubble column reactor of claim 12 wherein the volume of said deaeration zone is less than about 5 percent of the volume of said reaction zone.

14. The bubble column reactor of claim 12 wherein said deaeration zone has a maximum diameter in the range of from about 0.2 to about 2 meters and a maximum height in the range of from about 0.3 to about 5 meters.

15. The bubble column reactor of claim 12 wherein said deaeration zone has a substantially constant horizontal cross-sectional area.

16. The bubble column reactor of claim 15 wherein said deaeration zone is substantially cylindrical in shape.

17. The bubble column reactor of claim 12 wherein said L is in the range of from about 20 to about 75 meters, said D is in the range of from about 2 to about 10 meters, and said L:D is in the range of from about 8:1 to about 20:1.

18. The bubble column reactor of claim 12 wherein said reaction zone presents a normally-lower end and a normally-upper end spaced from one another by said length (L), wherein said vessel outlet is spaced at least about 1D from said normally-lower end of said reaction zone.

19. The bubble column reactor of claim 12 wherein at least a portion of said deaeration zone is located in said vessel shell.

20. The bubble column reactor of claim 12 wherein all of said deaeration zone is located outside of said vessel shell.
