Abstract

A system and method for inserting an intraocular lens in a patient's eye includes a light source for generating a light beam, a scanner for deflecting the light beam to form an enclosed treatment pattern that includes a registration feature, and a delivery system for delivering the enclosed treatment pattern to target tissue in the patient's eye to form an enclosed incision therein having the registration feature. An intraocular lens is placed within the enclosed incision, wherein the intraocular lens has a registration feature that engages with the registration feature of the enclosed incision. Alternately, the scanner can make a separate registration incision for a post that is connected to the intraocular lens via a strut member.

Claims (25)

1. A method of inserting an intraocular lens in a patient's eye, comprising:

generating a light beam;

deflecting the light beam using a scanner to form an enclosed treatment pattern that is configured to form an enclosed capsulorhexis incision that includes a registration feature;

delivering the enclosed treatment pattern to target tissue in the patient's eye to form in an anterior lens capsule of the patient's eye the enclosed capsulorhexis incision that includes the registration feature; and

placing an intraocular lens within the enclosed capsulorhexis incision, wherein the intraocular lens has an intraocular lens registration feature that engages with the registration feature of the enclosed capsulorhexis incision.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the enclosed capsulorhexis incision has an asymmetric shape and the intraocular lens has a peripheral edge with an asymmetric shape matching that of the enclosed incision.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the enclosed capsulorhexis incision forms a notch in the target tissue and the intraocular lens has a peripheral edge with a protrusion, and wherein the placing of the intraocular lens includes interfacing the notch and the protrusion.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the intraocular lens comprises a lens portion shaped for focusing light passing therethrough and a peripheral edge that includes an annular groove, and wherein the placing of the intraocular lens includes engaging the annular groove with an edge of the target tissue formed by the enclosed capsulorhexis incision.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the intraocular lens comprises a lens portion shaped for focusing light passing therethrough and a flange surrounding the lens such that the lens portion is configured to rotate within the flange, and wherein the method further comprises rotating the lens portion within the flange.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein at least one of the lens portion and the flange includes angular alignment marks formed thereon, and wherein the rotating is ceased when a desired angular position indicated by the angular alignment marks is achieved.

7. A method of inserting an intraocular lens in a patient's eye, comprising:

generating a light beam;

deflecting the light beam using a scanner to form an enclosed capsulorhexis treatment pattern and a registration pattern;

delivering the enclosed treatment pattern and the registration pattern to target tissue in the patient's eye to form an enclosed capsulorhexis incision and a registration incision in the patient's eye;

placing an intraocular lens within the enclosed capsulorhexis incision;

placing a post within the registration incision; and

using at least one strut member that connects the post and the intraocular lens to rotationally register the intraocular lens relative to the post.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the target tissue comprises one or both of an anterior capsule and a posterior capsule.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the method further comprises orienting the post to rotationally align the intraocular lens to an astigmatic axis of the patient's eye.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the registration pattern is a circular pattern.

11. A method of inserting an intraocular lens in a patient's eye, comprising:

generating a laser light beam;

deflecting the laser light beam, using a scanner, so as to deliver a laser light beam in a treatment pattern to a target tissue in the patient's eye and effect an incision pattern in an anterior capsule of a lens of the patient's eye, the incision pattern comprising a capsulorhexis incision and a registration feature incision; and

placing an intraocular lens within the patterned incision, wherein the intraocular lens has a registration feature that engages with the registration feature incision.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the capsulorhexis incision and registration feature incision are spaced apart so as to form separate and distinct incisions in the lens anterior capsule.
