Devices for limiting the movement of material introduced between layers of spinal tissue
View Patent ↗Devices for limiting the movement of flowable material introduced into or between tissue layers of the human spine. The devices can include at least one generally elongated member having a pre-deployed configuration for insertion into or between tissue layers of the human spine and a deployed configuration in which the elongated member forms a barrier that limits the movement of flowable material introduced into or between the tissue layers.
1. An intravertebral system for treating a vertebral body, comprising:
an elongated guide member having a distal end portion of a material that allows the distal end portion of the guide member to change between an insertion configuration for insertion into a vertebral body and an inserted configuration within the vertebral body, which inserted configuration comprises a plurality of generally horizontally-disposed windings;
an elongated intravertebral implant independently movable longitudinally relative to the distal end portion of the guide member for advancement therealong while the guide member is stationary, the implant being constrained by the guide member to conform to the configuration of the distal end portion of the guide member so that as the implant is advanced along the distal end portion of the guide member the implant conforms to the configuration of the guide member to form an inserted structure comprising a plurality of generally horizontally-disposed windings within the vertebral body, said structure defining an interior resident volume within the windings adapted to receive flowable material and the structure being configured to limit the movement of flowable material from the resident volume.
2. The intravertebral system of claim 1 in which at least some of the distal end portion of the guide member is substantially linear in the insertion configuration.
3. The intravertebral system of claim 1 in which the distal end portion of the guide member is biased to form the inserted configuration.
4. The intravertebral system of claim 1 in which at least the distal end portion of the guide member is comprised of a shape memory material.
5. The intravertebral system of claim 1 in which the windings of the structure extending in a generally circular direction.
6. The intravertebral system of claim 1 in which at least one of the windings of the structure has at least one adjacent winding thereabove or therebelow and the at least one winding being in contact with the adjacent winding.
7. The intravertebral system of claim 1 in which the elongated implant has a proximal end, a distal end and a longitudinal passageway therethrough, wherein the passageway is configured to receive the guide member for advancement of the elongated implant along the guide member.
8. The intravertebral system of claim 1 in which the elongated implant includes a longitudinal passageway in fluid communication with the resident volume, the passageway configured to receive the bone filler therethrough and into the resident volume.
9. The intravertebral system of claim 1 in which the guide member is removable from the structure.
10. An intravertebral system for treating a vertebral body, comprising:
an elongated guide member having a distal end portion of a material that allows the distal end portion of the guide member to change between an insertion configuration for insertion into the vertebral body and an arcuate inserted configuration within the vertebral body; and
an elongated intravertebral implant independently movable longitudinally relative to the guide member for advancement along the guide member while the guide member is stationary, the implant being constrained by the guide member and sufficiently flexible to conform to the configuration of the distal end portion of the guide member so that as the implant is advanced along the distal end portion of the guide member the implant conforms to the inserted configuration, which inserted configuration is shaped to form the implant into an arcuate structure that extends greater than 360 degrees within the vertebral body, the arcuate structure defining an internal resident volume adapted to receive bone filler and the arcuate structure being configured to limit the movement of bone filler from the resident volume.
11. The intravertebral system of claim 10 in which at least some of the distal end portion of the guide member is substantially linear in the insertion configuration.
12. The intravertebral system of claim 10 in which the distal end portion of the guide member is biased to form the inserted configuration.
13. The intravertebral system of claim 10 in which at least the distal end portion of the guide member is comprised of a shape memory material.
14. The intravertebral system of claim 10 in which the elongated implant has a proximal end, a distal end and a longitudinal passageway therethrough, wherein the passageway is configured to receive the guide member for advancement of the elongated implant along the guide member.
15. The intravertebral system of claim 10 in which the elongated implant includes a longitudinal passageway in fluid communication with the resident volume, the passageway configured to receive the bone filler therethrough and into the resident volume.
16. The intravertebral system of claim 10 in which the guide member is removable from the structure.
