Abstract

A multimedia authoring and playback system and method in which the playback of multimedia content is presented in one or more windows or displays called “playback displays,” and in which additional windows or displays called “control displays” are included in some embodiments to provide various management and control functions. Included are features for creating, editing and distributing multimedia content, which may be viewed by recipients who play the content (and in some cases may be allowed to modify it); also included are features for programming playback behavior of multimedia content, interconnecting multimedia content, and exploring and navigating through multimedia content.

Claims (27)

1. A method of editing a shared multimedia presentation over a network, the method comprising:

sending, by a network data server, a first playback display operating on a first user computer for displaying and editing first presentation data corresponding to the shared multimedia presentation;

sending, by the network data server, a second playback display operating on a second user computer for displaying and editing second presentation data corresponding to the shared multimedia presentation;

receiving, by the network data server, a first message indicating that a media object was added to the first presentation data via the first playback display by a first user, the media object containing media data, the media data including at least one of video data or animated graphics data;

updating, by the network data server, the second playback display by adding the media object based on the first message, a default playback behavior associated with the media object;

receiving, by the network data server, a second message by the data server indicating that the playback behavior data was modified from the default playback behavior for the media object by a second user programming playback behavior of the media object via the second playback display; and

updating, by the network data server, the first playback display by modifying playback behavior data of the media object based on the second message.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the network data server, a playback request from the first playback display;

initiating, by the network data server, playback of the shared multimedia presentation in the first playback display; and

modifying, by the network data server, the media object in the shared multimedia presentation based on the playback behavior data.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the modifying the media object in the shared multimedia presentation based on the playback behavior data includes applying, by the network data server, playback behavior described by the playback behavior data to the media object incrementally over a predetermined time period.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the playback behavior is a transition effect selected from the group consisting of zoom-out, fade-in, fade-out, and pulsate.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first playback display and second playback display is a web page.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first presentation data includes a pointer to a remote graphics object stored on a remote server.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

receiving, by the first playback display, a playback request from the first user;

retrieving, by the first playback display, the remote graphics object from the remote server using the pointer; and

presenting, by the first playback display, the remote graphics object in the first playback display.

8. A system for viewing and editing a shared multimedia presentation over a network, the system comprising:

a processor for generating a first playback display and a second playback display, wherein the first playback display and the second playback display permit viewing and editing of the shared multimedia presentation on a user computer;

a first communication module configured to send the first playback display to a first user computer and further configured to send the second playback display to a second user computer;

a second communication module configured to receive a first message indicating that a media object was added to the first presentation data via the first playback display the media object containing media data, the media data including at least one of video data or animated graphics data, and update the second playback display by adding the media object, a default playback behavior associated with the media object; and

a third communication module configured to receive a second message by the data server indicating that the playback behavior data was modified from the default playback behavior for the media object by a user programming playback behavior of the media object via the second playback display and update the first playback display by modifying playback behavior data of the media object.

9. The system of claim 8 , further comprising:

a playback module configured to initiate playback of the shared multimedia presentation in the first playback display based on a playback request received from the first playback display.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the playback module is further configured to apply playback behavior described by the playback behavior data to the media object incrementally over a predetermined time period during playback in the first playback display.
