Abstract

Networks, devices and methods related to wireless networking. A wireless network using nodes that perform both distribution and backhaul functions is provided. These nodes constitute the key elements of a wireless network that would be deployed and controlled by a wireless network operator. Each node contains a distribution wireless module which is wirelessly coupled to the wireless end user device using a point to multipoint scheme. Also integrated into each node is at least one backhaul wireless module with a directional wireless antenna. Each backhaul wireless module communicates by way of a point to point wireless link with the backhaul module of one other node. The nodes in the wireless network are interconnected to form a mesh backhaul network. Because of the nature of a mesh network, data traffic can be routed around obstacles that may prevent line of site links. Furthermore, the mesh network allows dynamic routing of data traffic to avoid congestion points or downed links in the network.

Claims (35)

1. A device for receiving and transmitting a wireless signal, the device comprising:

two wireless backhaul modules for communicating with nodes in a wireless network; and

a wireless distribution module for communicating with a wireless end user device,

wherein the device receives the wireless signal from a first one of the nodes by way of a first one of the backhaul modules and transmits at least a portion of the wireless signal to either:

a second one of the nodes in the wireless network by way of a second one of the backhaul modules, or;

the end user device by way of the wireless distribution module,

wherein each backhaul module communicates with a single node in the wireless network at any one time, and

wherein the backhaul modules are collocated in the device and are configured to minimize interference therebetween.

2. The device according to claim 1 wherein the device further comprises:

a switch/router module for routing traffic between different modules in the device, the traffic being extracted from the wireless signal.

3. The device according to claim 2 wherein the device further comprises a network interface module for communicating with another network.

4. The device according to claim 1 wherein each wireless backhaul module communicates with the single node in the wireless network using a point-to-point wireless link.

5. The device according to claim 1 wherein each wireless backhaul module has a dedicated antenna for a point-to-point connection with another node in the wireless network.

6. The device according to claim 5 wherein the dedicated antenna has a beamwidth of about 15-60 degrees.

7. The device according to claim 1 wherein the wireless distribution module communicates with a plurality of wireless end user devices.

8. The device according to claim 1 wherein the device utilizes time-varying information to route traffic in the wireless network.

9. The device according to claim 8 wherein, for each backhaul module, the time-varying information is derived from bit rate information related to a link between the backhaul module and the single node.

10. The device according to claim 8 wherein, for each backhaul module, the time-varying information is derived from link utilization information related to a utilization of a link between the backhaul module and the single node.

11. The device according to claim 1 wherein, for each wireless backhaul module, the device negotiates with the single node to determine transmission parameters between the device and the single node.

12. The device according to claim 1 wherein the backhaul modules are time synchronized such that all backhaul modules in the device transmit only during common time intervals.

13. The device according to claim 12 wherein the backhaul modules are time synchronized with a framing signal such that the timing of transmissions from any backhaul module in the device is based on the framing signal.

14. A device for receiving and transmitting a wireless signal in a wireless network, the device comprising:

two wireless backhaul modules for communicating with nodes in the wireless network;

a switch/router module for routing traffic between different modules in the device, the traffic being extracted from the wireless signal; and

a network interface module for communicating with another network;

wherein the device receives the wireless signal from a first one of the nodes by way of a first one of the backhaul modules and transmits at least a portion of the wireless signal to a destination selected from a group comprising:

a second one of the nodes in the wireless network by way of a second one of the backhaul modules; and

the other network by way of the network interface module;

wherein each backhaul module communicates with a single node in the wireless network at any one time, and

wherein the two backhaul modules are collocated in the device and are configured to minimize interference therebetween.

15. The device according to claim 14 wherein the device further comprises a wireless distribution module for communicating with a wireless end user device.

16. The device according to claim 14 wherein the backhaul modules are time synchronized such that all backhaul modules in the device transmit only during common time intervals.

17. The device according to claim 15 wherein the backhaul modules are time synchronized such that all backhaul modules in the device transmit only during common time intervals.

18. The device according to claim 16 wherein the backhaul modules are time synchronized with a framing signal such that the timing of transmissions from any backhaul module in the device is based on the framing signal.

19. The device according to claim 17 wherein the backhaul modules are time synchronized with a framing signal such that the timing of transmissions from any backhaul module in the device is based on the framing signal.
