Abstract

A tulip assembly configured to be coupled to a head of a bone fixation device includes at least one inner member configured to fix the tulip assembly to the head of a bone fixation device, and an outer member including at least one engagement surface configured to selectively fix a rod in the tulip assembly via rotation of the outer member, wherein the fixation of the tulip assembly to the head of the bone fixation device is independent of the fixation of a rod in the tulip assembly.

Claims (48)

1. A tulip housing member comprising:

a body member;

said body member having a rod-reception channel and a rod seat both of which are adapted to receive a rod, said body member comprising at least one engagement surface in communication with said rod-reception channel, said rod-reception channel having a portion that extends axially and a second portion that extends about an axis of said body member;

said at least one engagement surface configured to selectively fix said rod in the tulip housing member via rotation of said body member;

said body member being adapted to receive at least one inner member configured to have a rotational relationship with said body member to fix said body member to a head of a bone fixation device; and

wherein during said rotation of at least one of said body member or said at least one inner member, said at least one engagement surface engages said rod and causes said rod to move in said rod-reception channel and locks said rod in said rod seat;

wherein said second portion extends in a curve about said axis.

2. The body member of claim 1 , wherein said at least one engagement surface comprises a declining plane configured to force said rod into said rod seat.

3. The tulip housing member of claim 1 , wherein said body member comprises an internal lip adapted to define a seating bore.

4. The tulip housing member of claim 1 , wherein said body member comprises a rod locking surface for locking the rod in the rod-reception channel after said rod is received therein.

5. The tulip housing member as recited in claim 1 , wherein said body member comprises a wall that extends about an axis of said body member, said portion of said rod-reception channel that extends axially defined by a pair of generally opposed axial channels or openings in said wall of said body member.

6. A tulip housing member comprising:

a body member;

said body member having a rod-reception channel and a rod seat both of which are adapted to receive a rod, said body member comprising at least one engagement surface in communication with said rod-reception channel, said rod-reception channel having a portion that extends axially and a second portion that extends about an axis of said body member;

said at least one engagement surface configured to selectively fix said rod in the tulip housing member via rotation of said body member;

said body member being adapted to receive at least one inner member configured to have a rotational relationship with said body member to fix said body member to a head of a bone fixation device; and

wherein during said rotation of at least one of said body member or said at least one inner member, said at least one engagement surface engages said rod and causes said rod to move in said rod-reception channel and locks said rod in said rod seat;

wherein said at least one engagement surface comprises a declining plane configured to force said rod into said rod seat;

wherein the body member comprises a tapered bore in communication with a seating bore and said rod-reception channel.

7. A tulip housing member comprising:

a body member;

said body member having a rod-reception channel and a rod seat both of which are adapted to receive a rod, said body member comprising at least one engagement surface in communication with said rod-reception channel, said rod-reception channel having a portion that extends axially and a second portion that extends about an axis of said body member;

said at least one engagement surface configured to selectively fix said rod in the tulip housing member via rotation of said body member;

said body member being adapted to receive at least one inner member configured to have a rotational relationship with said body member to fix said body member to a head of a bone fixation device; and

wherein during said rotation of at least one of said body member or said at least one inner member, said at least one engagement surface engages said rod and causes said rod to move in said rod-reception channel and locks said rod in said rod seat;

wherein the body member comprises a tapered bore in communication with a seating bore and said rod-reception channel.

8. A tulip housing member comprising:

a body member;

said body member having a rod-reception channel and a rod seat both of which are adapted to receive a rod, said body member comprising at least one engagement surface in communication with said rod-reception channel, said rod-reception channel having a portion that extends axially and a second portion that extends about an axis of said body member;

said at least one engagement surface configured to selectively fix said rod in the tulip housing member via rotation of said body member;

said body member being adapted to receive at least one inner member configured to have a rotational relationship with said body member to fix said body member to a head of a bone fixation device; and

wherein during said rotation of at least one of said body member or said at least one inner member, said at least one engagement surface engages said rod and causes said rod to move in said rod-reception channel and locks said rod in said rod seat;

wherein said body member comprises a wall that extends about an axis of said body member, said portion of said rod-reception channel that extends about said axis being defined by a pair of generally opposed curved channels or openings in said wall of said body member.

9. A tulip housing member comprising:

a body member;

said body member having a rod-reception channel and a rod seat both of which are adapted to receive a rod, said body member comprising at least one engagement surface in communication with said rod-reception channel, said rod-reception channel having a portion that extends axially and a second portion that extends about an axis of said body member;

said at least one engagement surface configured to selectively fix said rod in the tulip housing member via rotation of said body member;

said body member being adapted to receive at least one inner member configured to have a rotational relationship with said body member to fix said body member to a head of a bone fixation device; and

wherein during said rotation of at least one of said body member or said at least one inner member, said at least one engagement surface engages said rod and causes said rod to move in said rod-reception channel and locks said rod in said rod seat;

wherein said portion of said rod-reception channel that extends about said axis being defined by a pair of generally opposed curved channels or openings in said wall of said body member.

10. The tulip housing member as recited in claim 9 wherein said generally opposed curved channels or openings extend in a common direction about said axis of said body member.

11. A tulip housing member comprising:

a body member;

said body member having a rod-reception channel and a rod seat both of which are adapted to receive a rod, said body member comprising at least one engagement surface in communication with said rod-reception channel, said rod-reception channel having a portion that extends axially and a second portion that extends about an axis of said body member:

said at least one engagement surface configured to selectively fix said rod in the tulip housing member via rotation of said body member:

said body member being adapted to receive at least one inner member configured to have a rotational relationship with said body member to fix said body member to a head of a bone fixation device: and

wherein during said rotation of at least one of said body member or said at least one inner member, said at least one engagement surface engages said rod and causes said rod to move in said rod-reception channel and locks said rod in said rod seat:

wherein said portion of said rod-reception channel that extends about said axis is defined by a pair of generally opposed curved channels or openings that are in communication with said generally opposed axial channels or openings, said generally opposed curved channels or openings extending away from their respective axial channel or opening in a common direction about said axis.
