Abstract

The present invention provides a test strip for measuring a concentration of an analyte of interest in a biological fluid, wherein the test strip may be encoded with information that can be read by a test meter into which the test strip is inserted.

Claims (15)

1. A method for reading information on a test strip, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a test strip configured to receive a biological fluid sample and having a substrate with a top surface, a conductive layer formed on at least a portion of the substrate top surface and forming at least one electrode, and at least one contact pad position defined upon the substrate top surface;

wherein the presence of the conductive layer in any one of the at least one contact pad positions conductively connects said any one of the at least one contact pad positions with the conductive layer to the at least one electrode;

wherein the absence of the conductive layer in any one of the at least one contact pad positions disconnects said any one of the at least one contact pad positions without the conductive layer from the at least one electrode;

providing a test meter for measuring a concentration of an analyte of interest in the biological fluid sample on the test strip, the test meter having at least one connector contact;

inserting the test strip into the test meter; and

the test meter detecting the presence or absence of the conductive layer in the at least one contact pad position only after the test strip is fully inserted into the meter, wherein the test meter is configured and adapted to assign a first binary bit to the presence of the conductive layer and a second binary bit to the absence of the conductive layer to read information on the test strip.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one contact pad position comprises at least seven contact pad positions and the at least one connector contact comprises at least seven connector contacts.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one contact pad position comprises at least twelve contact pad positions and the at least one connector contact comprises at least twelve connector contacts.

4. A system, comprising:

a test strip configured to receive a biological fluid sample and having a substrate with a top surface, a conductive layer formed on at least a portion of the substrate top surface and forming at least one electrode, and at least one contact pad position defined upon the substrate top surface;

wherein the presence of the conductive layer in any one of the at least one contact pad positions conductively connects said any one of the at least one contact pad positions with the conductive layer to the at least one electrode;

wherein the absence of the conductive layer in any one of the at least one contact pad positions disconnects said any one of the at least one contact pad positions without the conductive layer from the at least one electrode; and

a test meter for measuring a concentration of an analyte of interest in the biological fluid sample on the test strip, the test meter having at least one connector contact;

wherein each one of the at least one connector contact contacts a respective one of the at least one contact pad position when the test strip is inserted into the test meter, wherein the test meter is configured and adapted to detect the presence or absence of the conductive layer in the at least one contact pad position only after the test strip is fully inserted into the meter, wherein the test meter is configured and adapted to assign a first binary bit to the presence of the conductive layer and a second binary bit to the absence of the conductive layer to read information on the test strip.
