Abstract

A service gauge for determining refrigerant pressure and the saturated vapor equivalent temperature, or other parameters, for a refrigerant in an HVAC system. In one embodiment, the service gauge employs a bourdon tube with at least one attached strain gauge to sense the refrigerant pressure and produce an electronic pressure signal. In another embodiment, a magnet and rotary position sensor produces an electronic signal proportional to the refrigerant pressure. The electronic pressure signal from the output of the strain gauge or the rotary position sensor is connected to a microprocessor, which calculates and displays the refrigerant pressure, the saturated vapor equivalent temperature for a variety of refrigerants, produces instantaneous and time lapsed representations of those parameters, and other parameters of the refrigerant.

Claims (11)

1. A service gauge for determining refrigerant pressure of a refrigerant in a refrigerant line and for determining other parameters relating to the refrigerant in the refrigerant line comprising:

a. a pressure sensor connected to refrigerant line for producing an electronic pressure signal proportional to the refrigerant pressure of the refrigerant in the refrigerant line, wherein the pressure sensor comprises:

i. a bourdon tube connected to the refrigerant line and operatively connected to a magnet attached to the bourdon tube so that the magnet moves in response to the straightening and curling of the bourdon tube in response to changing pressure in the refrigerant line;

ii. a position sensor positioned adjacent to, but not in contact with the magnet, which position sensor determines the straightening or curling position of the bourdon tube and produces the electronic pressure signal that is proportional to the refrigerant pressure;

b. a microprocessor for receiving the electronic pressure signal and programmed to calculate an auxiliary parameter relating to the refrigerant pressure from the electronic pressure signal; and

c. a display connected to the microprocessor for showing the calculated auxiliary parameter.

2. The service gauge of claim 1 , wherein the pressure sensor further comprises pointer gears operatively connecting the bourdon tube to a needle shaft with a needle pointer attached thereto for indicating the refrigerant pressure on a dial of the service gauge, so that the needle shaft rotates in response to straightening and curling of the bourdon tube in response to changing refrigerant pressure in the refrigerant line, wherein the magnet is attached to the needle shaft for rotation therewith, and wherein the position sensor is a rotary position sensor positioned adjacent to, but not in contact with the magnet, which rotary position sensor determines the angular position of the needle shaft and produces the electronic pressure signal that is proportional to the refrigerant pressure.

3. The service gauge of claim 1 , wherein the microprocessor receives the electronic pressure signal and a temperature signal and calculates the auxiliary parameter selected from the group including a saturated vapor equivalent temperature, a trend line for pressure, a trend line for saturated vapor equivalent temperature, an instantaneous pressure bar graph, pressure, and a super-heat/sub-cool temperature.

4. The service gauge of claim 3 , wherein the display is a digital display for displaying the auxiliary parameter calculated by the microprocessor.

5. The service gauge of claim 2 , wherein the microprocessor receives the electronic pressure signal and a temperature signal and calculates the auxiliary parameter selected from the group including a saturated vapor equivalent temperature and a super-heat/sub-cool temperature.

6. The service gauge of claim 5 , wherein the display is an analog display comprising an auxiliary needle shaft with an auxiliary needle pointer attached thereto for indicating on the dial of the service gauge the auxiliary parameter calculated by the microprocessor, and a servo motor operatively connected to the auxiliary needle shaft to drive the auxiliary needle shaft in response to the receipt of a drive signal from the microprocessor proportional to the auxiliary parameter.
