Abstract

Provided is refrigeration appliance that includes a fresh food compartment and a freezer compartment for storing food items in a refrigerated environment. The refrigeration appliance also includes at least one door restricting access into at least one of the fresh food compartment and the freezer compartment. A heated mullion including a substantially-planar, externally-exposed surface is provided to cooperate with a seal provided to the door. An ice chute extends at least partially through the door for dispensing ice through the door. The ice chute includes a fastener for coupling the ice chute to a door liner and maintain the position of the ice chute relative to the door liner during installation of an insulating material in the door.

Claims (15)

1. A refrigeration appliance comprising:

a fresh food compartment for storing food items in a refrigerated environment having a target temperature above zero degrees Centigrade;

a freezer compartment disposed at an elevation vertically below said fresh food compartment for storing food items in a sub-freezing environment having a target temperature below zero degrees Centigrade;

an ice maker disposed within said fresh food compartment, said ice maker comprising an ice bin for storing ice pieces produced by said ice maker;

at least one door restricting access into said fresh food compartment, said door comprising a door liner defining an aperture through which ice pieces are discharged from said door and an inner liner establishing an interior surface of said door that opposes said fresh food compartment when said door is closed; and

an ice chute extending at least partially through said door between said door liner and said inner liner, said ice chute comprising a fastener coupling said ice chute to said door liner with sufficient force to resist forces imparted on said ice chute during installation of an insulating material to substantially maintaining a position of said ice chute relative to said door liner during installation of said insulating material that at least partially encompasses said ice chute within said door.

2. The refrigeration appliance according to claim 1 , wherein said fastener is a male tab that projects outwardly from a periphery of an outlet aperture and is received within a notch formed in an aperture in said door liner.

3. The refrigeration appliance according to claim 2 , wherein said outlet aperture is at least partially received within said aperture formed in said door liner to establish a friction fit between said ice chute and said door liner.

4. A method of assembling an insulated door for restricting access into a refrigeration appliance, said method comprising:

coupling a door liner to an externally-exposed door skin;

establishing a friction fit between an ice chute and said door liner, said friction fit being sufficiently strong to substantially maintain relative positioning of said ice chute relative to said door liner when said ice chute is exposed to an insulating material;

installing an internal liner opposing said door liner; and

introducing said insulating material between said door liner and said inner liner to at least partially encompass said ice chute.

5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein establishing said friction fit between said ice chute and said door liner comprises mating a male tab that projects outwardly from a periphery of an outlet aperture with a notch formed in an aperture in said door liner.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein establishing said friction fit further comprises at least partially inserting said periphery of said outlet into said aperture in said door liner.
