Abstract

A facility for rewarding the provision of useful item reviews is described. The facility receives a plurality of item reviews, each from a source. The facility publishes each of the plurality of received item reviews, and assesses the usefulness of the published item reviews. Based upon this assessment of usefulness, the facility selects one or more of the published item reviews, and provides rewards to the sources of these selected item reviews.

Claims (44)

1. A method in a computing system for rewarding the provision of useful item reviews, comprising:

receiving, at the computing system, a plurality of item reviews from one or more sources;

publishing, by the computing system, the plurality of item reviews;

assessing, by the computing system, the usefulness of the published item reviews;

based upon the assessment of usefulness, selecting, by the computing system, one or more of the sources of the published item reviews;

determining, by the computing system one or more rewards to be provided to the selected sources of the published item reviews; and

applying a formula by the computer system to obtain a score for at least one source at least partly based upon an indication that considers, for a review for a first item submitted by the at least one source, how many consumers to whom the review for the first item was displayed subsequently ordered the first item.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sources of item reviews are authors.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the rewards includes a publication of a laudatory message about a corresponding source.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the rewards includes a publication of a laudatory message displayed in association with a ranked listing of the selected sources of the published item reviews, wherein a ranking indicates a level of usefulness of reviews of the corresponding source.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the rewards includes a publication of a laudatory message displayed in association with a ranked listing of the selected sources of the published item reviews, including corresponding selectable links, that when selected by a user, provide additional information regarding the corresponding selected sources.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the rewards includes a publication of information about a corresponding selected source provided by the corresponding selected source displayed in association with a reviewer ranking of the corresponding selected source.

7. The method of claim 1 , the method further comprising applying a formula by the computer system to obtain a score for at least one source at least partly based upon an indication that considers, for a review for an item submitted by the at least one source, whether the review submitted by the at least one source is a first review submitted for the item.

8. The method of claim 1 , the method further comprising providing for display identities of the selected sources of the published item reviews.

9. An apparatus, comprising:

a computing system;

a program stored in computer readable memory that when executed by the computing system is configured to cause the computing system to perform operations comprising:

receiving a plurality of item reviews from one or more sources;

publishing the plurality of item reviews;

assessing the usefulness of the published item reviews;

based upon the assessment of usefulness, selecting one or more of the sources of the published item reviews;

providing one or more rewards to the selected sources of the published item reviews; and

applying a formula to obtain a score for at least one source at least partly based upon an indication that considers, for a review for a first item submitted by the at least one source, how many consumers to whom the review for the first item was displayed subsequently ordered the first item.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the one or more sources of item reviews are authors.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the rewards includes a publication of a laudatory message about a corresponding source.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the rewards includes a publication of a laudatory message displayed in association with a ranked listing of the selected sources of the published item reviews, wherein a ranking indicates a level of usefulness of reviews of the corresponding source.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the rewards includes a publication of a laudatory message displayed in association with a ranked listing of the selected sources of the published item reviews, including corresponding selectable links, that when selected by a user, provide additional information regarding the corresponding selected sources.

14. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the rewards includes a publication of information about a corresponding selected source provided by the corresponding selected source displayed in association with a reviewer ranking of the corresponding selected source.

15. The apparatus of claim 9 , the operations further comprising applying a formula to obtain a score for at least one source at least partly based upon an indication that considers, for a review for an item submitted by the at least one source, whether the review submitted by the at least one source is a first review submitted for the item.

16. The apparatus of claim 9 , the operations further comprising providing for display identities of the selected sources of the published item reviews.

17. A program stored in computer readable memory that when executed by a computing system is configured to cause the computing system to perform operations comprising:

receiving a plurality of item reviews from one or more sources;

publishing the plurality of item reviews;

assessing the usefulness of the published item reviews;

based upon the assessment of usefulness, selecting one or more of the sources of the published item reviews;

providing one or more rewards to the selected sources of the published item reviews; and

applying a formula to obtain a score for at least one source at least partly based upon an indication that considers, for a review for a first item submitted by the at least one source, how many consumers to whom the review for the first item was displayed subsequently ordered the first item.

18. The computer readable memory of claim 17 , wherein the one or more sources of item reviews are authors.

19. The computer readable memory of claim 17 , wherein at least one of the rewards includes a publication of a laudatory message about a corresponding source.

20. The computer readable memory of claim 17 , wherein at least one of the rewards includes a publication of a laudatory message displayed in association with a ranked listing of the selected sources of the published item reviews, wherein a ranking indicates a level of usefulness of reviews of the corresponding source.

21. The computer readable memory of claim 17 , wherein at least one of the rewards includes a publication of a laudatory message displayed in association with a ranked listing of the selected sources of the published item reviews, including corresponding selectable links, that when selected by a user, provide additional information regarding the corresponding selected sources.

22. The computer readable memory of claim 17 , wherein at least one of the rewards includes a publication of information about a corresponding selected source provided by the corresponding selected source displayed in association with a reviewer ranking of the corresponding selected source.

23. The computer readable memory of claim 17 , the operations further comprising applying a formula to obtain a score for at least one source at least partly based upon an indication that considers, for a review for an item submitted by the at least one source, whether the review submitted by the at least one source is a first review submitted for the item.

24. The computer readable memory of claim 17 , the operations further comprising providing for display identities of the selected sources of the published item reviews.
