Abstract

A power system having a power converter with an adaptive controller. The power system is coupled to a load and includes a power system controller that receives a signal indicating a system operational state of the load and selects a power converter operational state as a function thereof. The power system also includes a power converter with a power switch that conducts for a duty cycle to provide a regulated output characteristic at an output thereof. The power converter also includes a controller that receives a command from the power system controller to enter the power converter operational state and provides a signal to control the duty cycle of the power switch as a function of the output characteristic and in accordance with the command, thereby regulating an internal operating characteristic of the power converter to improve an operating efficiency thereof as a function of the system operational state.

Claims (50)

1. A power converter coupled to a power system controller configured to receive a signal indicating a system operational state of a load coupled thereto, comprising:

a power switch configured to conduct for a duty cycle to provide a regulated output characteristic at an output thereof; and

a controller configured to receive a command from said power system controller to enter a power converter operational state selected from the group consisting of a fully operational state, a reduced redundancy operational state and an idle operational state as a function of said signal indicating said system operational state and provide a signal to control said duty cycle of said power switch as a function of said output characteristic and in accordance with said command.

2. The power converter as recited in claim 1 wherein said power converter is configured to enter said power converter operational state within a transition time from another power converter operational state.

3. The power converter as recited in claim 1 wherein said power system controller is configured to receive a signal indicating a power converter status of said power converter.

4. The power converter as recited in claim 1 wherein said load includes a processor and said system operational state depends on one of a core state and a performance state of said processor.

5. The power converter as recited in claim 1 wherein said power converter operational state is further selected from the group consisting of:

a reduced load operational state,

a light load operational state, and

a very light load operational state.

6. A power system coupled to a load, comprising:

a power system controller configured to receive a signal indicating a system operational state of said load and to select a power converter operational state selected from the group consisting of a fully operational state, a reduced redundancy operational state and an idle operational state as a function thereof; and

a power converter, including:

a power switch configured to conduct for a duty cycle to provide a regulated output characteristic at an output thereof, and

a controller configured to receive a command from said power system controller to enter said power converter operational state and provide a signal to control said duty cycle of said power switch as a function of said output characteristic and in accordance with said command.

7. The power system as recited in claim 6 wherein said power system is coupled to another load and said power system controller is configured to receive another signal indicating another system operational state of said another load and to select another power converter operational state as a function thereof, said power system, further comprising:

another power converter, including:

another power switch configured to conduct for a duty cycle to provide a regulated output characteristic at an output thereof, and

another controller configured to receive another command from said power system controller to enter said another power converter operational state and to provide a signal to control said duty cycle of said another power switch as a function of said output characteristic and in accordance with said another command.

8. The power system as recited in claim 7 wherein at least one of said system operational state and said another system operational state, and said power converter operational state and said another power converter operational state, are different.

9. The power system as recited in claim 7 wherein said power converter and said another power converter are configured to provide power to said load and said another load, respectively.

10. The power system as recited in claim 7 wherein said power system controller is configured to sequentially operate said power converter and said another power converter.

11. The power system as recited in claim 6 wherein said power converter is configured to enter said power converter operational state within a transition time from another power converter operational state.

12. The power system as recited in claim 6 wherein said power system controller is configured to receive a signal indicating a power converter status of said power converter.

13. The power system as recited in claim 12 wherein said power converter status is selected from the group consisting of:

a fully operational status,

a failure likely status,

a failed status, and

an overloaded status.

14. The power system as recited in claim 6 wherein said load includes a processor and said system operational state depends on one of a core state and a performance state of said processor.

15. The power system as recited in claim 6 wherein said power converter operational state is further selected from the group consisting of:

a reduced load operational state,

a light load operational state, and

a very light load operational state.

16. A method of operating a power system coupled to a load, comprising:

receiving a signal indicating a system operational state of said load;

generating a power converter operational state selected from the group consisting of a fully operational state, a reduced redundancy operational state and an idle operational state as a function of said system operational state;

inducing a power converter to enter said power converter operational state; and

providing a signal to control a duty cycle of a power switch of said power converter as a function of an output characteristic thereof and in accordance with said power converter operational state.

17. The method as recited in claim 16 wherein said power system is coupled to another load and further comprising:

receiving another signal indicating another system operational state of said another load;

generating another power converter operational state as a function of said another system operational state;

inducing another power converter to enter said another power converter operational state; and

providing a signal to control a duty cycle of another power switch of said another power converter as a function of an output characteristic thereof and in accordance with said another power converter operational state.

18. The method as recited in claim 17 wherein said power converter and said another power converter are operated sequentially.

19. The method as recited in claim 16 further comprising receiving a signal indicating a power converter status of said power converter and generating said power converter operational state as a function thereof.

20. The method as recited in claim 16 wherein said power converter operational state is selected from the group consisting of:

a reduced load operational state,
