Abstract

An interrogator for a plurality of sensor fiber optic gratings. The interrogator includes a broadband optical source; at least one beam splitter directing output of the optical source to the sensor fiber optic gratings; at least one linear filter for converting changes in peak reflection wavelength to changes in intensity; at least one optical receiver; at least one amplifier associated with each optical receiver; and an active closed-loop circuit following the at least one amplifier to provide bias voltage stabilization.

Claims (30)

1. An interrogator for a plurality of sensor fiber optic gratings comprising:

a broadband optical source;

at least one beam splitter directing output of the optical source to the sensor fiber optic gratings;

at least one linear filter for converting changes in peak reflection wavelength to changes in intensity;

at least one optical receiver;

at least one amplifier associated with each optical receiver;

an active closed-loop circuit following said at least one amplifier to provide bias voltage stabilization.

2. The interrogator of claim 1 further comprising a temperature-controlled compensating array of fiber optic gratings wherein the interrogator's response to the compensating array as a function of temperature is calibrated and wherein the compensating array is interrogated each time the sensor fiber optic gratings are interrogated, thereby compensating apparent wavelengths of the sensor fiber optic gratings for changes in intensity and wavelength spectrum of other components.

3. The interrogator of claim 2 wherein the compensating fiber optic gratings have center wavelengths equally distributed throughout a measurement range of the interrogator.

4. The interrogator of claim 2 wherein the broadband optical source is one of a Light Emitting Diode (LED), a Superluminescent Light Emitting Diode (SLED), an Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) source and a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA).

5. The interrogator of claim 1 further comprising an analog integrator following the active closed-loop circuit.

6. The interrogator of claim 5 wherein a fast reset is applied to the analog integrator to force an output voltage of the analog integrator to zero.

7. The interrogator of claim 5 wherein the analog integrator is configured to reset at a rate faster than two percent of a sampling interval of the interrogator.

8. The interrogator of claim 1 wherein the broadband optical source is configured to be operated in a pulsed mode, and wherein a plurality of return pulses from the plurality of sensor fiber optic gratings are separated in time by an amount proportional to a physical separation of the plurality of sensor fiber optic gratings.

9. The interrogator of claim 8 wherein the interrogator is configured to implement a method comprising the steps of:

calibrating an error function using a pair of known sensor fiber optic gratings arranged such that one of the plurality of sensor fiber optic gratings masks another of the plurality of sensor fiber optic gratings;

measuring a center wavelength of the one of the plurality of sensor fiber optic gratings;

determining an uncompensated wavelength of the another of the plurality of sensor fiber optic gratings; and

correcting the uncompensated wavelength with a correction factor determined from the error function using the measured center wavelength of the one of the plurality of sensor fiber optic gratings.

10. The interrogator of claim 1 further comprising a driver configured to generate pulses for the broadband optical source.

11. The interrogator of claim 10 wherein the pulses from the driver provide randomization of optical intensity ripple phase versus wavelength of the output from the broadband optical source.

12. The interrogator of claim 1 wherein an injection current to the broadband optical source is varied sinusoidally.

13. The interrogator of claim 12 wherein the sinusoidal variation of the injection current is less than 2% of the injection current, and a period of the sinusoidal variation is in a range between 0.1% to 1% of a sampling interval.

14. The interrogator of claim 1 wherein the at least one linear filter includes a linear transmission filter used to convert a change in peak reflection wavelength of a grating reflectivity spectrum to a change in intensity.

15. The interrogator of claim 1 wherein the at least one linear filter includes a pair of opposite-sloped linear transmission filters.

16. The interrogator of claim 1 wherein the broadband optical source is pulsed, and return pulses from each of the plurality of sensor fiber optic gratings are configured to be sampled by the interrogator at different times.

17. The interrogator of claim 1 wherein a driver for the broadband optical source randomizes ripple phase versus wavelength to reduce wavelength measurement error.

18. The interrogator of claim 1 wherein the broadband optical source is one of a Light Emitting Diode (LED), a Superluminescent Light Emitting Diode (SLED), an Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) source and a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA).

19. The interrogator of claim 1 wherein the at least one optical receiver includes a photodiode.

20. The interrogator of claim 1 wherein the at least one beam splitter includes a fiber optic circulator.
