Abstract

A printhead is provided having corresponding nozzles, chambers and heaters. Each heater has a heater element and electrodes connecting current from a power source to the heater elements to heat, and form gas bubbles in, liquid within the chambers which causes ejection of the liquid from the nozzles. Each heater element has a cross section with a lateral dimension at least triple that of the thickness of that heater element and different than a lateral dimension of each other heater element of the corresponding chamber. The thickness of each heater element is less than 0.3 microns. The heater elements and associated electrodes are arranged so that the electrodes are non-coincident with the electrodes of the other heater elements.

Claims (8)

1. A printhead comprising a plurality of corresponding nozzles, chambers and heaters, each heater comprising a heater element and electrodes connecting current from a power source to the heater elements to heat, and form gas bubbles in, liquid within the chambers which causes ejection of the liquid from the nozzles,

wherein each heater element has a cross section with a lateral dimension at least triple that of the thickness of that heater element and different than a lateral dimension of each other heater element of the corresponding chamber, the thickness of each heat element being less than 0.3 microns, and

the heater elements and associated electrodes are arranged so that the electrodes are non-coincident with the electrodes of the other heater elements.

2. A printhead according to claim 1 wherein the heater elements are configured so that the gas bubbles are formed on a central axis of the corresponding nozzles.

3. A printhead according to claim 1 wherein the chambers have a circular cross section.

4. A printhead according to claim 1 comprising a substrate having a substrate surface, the areal density of the nozzles relative to the substrate surface exceeding 10,000 nozzles per square cm of substrate surface.

5. A printhead according to claim 1 comprising a structure that is formed by chemical vapor deposition, the nozzles being incorporated in the structure.

6. A printhead according to claim 1 comprising a structure which is less than 10 microns thick, the nozzles being incorporated in the structure.
