Abstract

A flexible cable for sternal reconstruction, the cable including first and second ends, the first end of the cable including a crimp fitting member, and the crimp fitting member including a flattened disk-like head. Also provided are methods for sternal reconstruction including wrapping a flexible cable having first and second ends around the sternum, tensioning the flexible cable to a desired tension and securing the tensioned cable, wherein the first end of the cable includes a crimp fitting member, and the crimp fitting member includes a flattened disk-like head.

Claims (17)

1. A flexible cable for sternal reconstruction, the cable having opposed first and second ends, the flexible cable comprising:

a crimp fitting member disposed at the first end of the flexible cable, the crimp fitting member including:

a flattened disk-like head having a lower surface, the flattened disk-like head elongate along the lower surface, the disk-like head defines a first hole, the first hole sized to receive the second end of the cable; and

a crimp shaft extending from the lower surface, the crimp shaft defining a second hole extending along a direction substantially perpendicular to the lower surface, the second hole configured to receive the first end of the flexible cable;

wherein the second end of the flexible cable is secured within the first hole by crimping the flattened disk-like head such that the first hole is reduced in size.

2. The flexible cable of claim 1 , wherein the flattened disk-like head has a diameter of from about 2 mm to about 10 mm and a thickness of from about 0.1 mm to about 4 mm.

3. The flexible cable of claim 1 , wherein the head comprises an upper surface opposite the lower surface, the upper surface having a rounded peripheral edge.

4. The flexible cable of claim 1 , wherein the lower surface of the head is flat.

5. The flexible cable of claim 1 , wherein the first hole is a diametrical hole.

6. The flexible cable of claim 5 , wherein the head defines opposed openings at either end of the first hole, and the head further defines a counter sink region at each opening.

7. The flexible cable of claim 1 , wherein the first end of the flexible cable is secured within the second hole of the crimp shaft by crimping the crimp shaft such that the second hole is reduced in size.

8. The flexible cable of claim 7 , wherein the crimp shaft is cylindrically shaped.

9. The flexible cable of claim 7 , wherein the crimp shaft has a non-circular cross-section.

10. The flexible cable of claim 7 , wherein the crimp shaft is located on the lower surface of the crimp head such that the perimeter of the lower surface of the crimp head surrounds the crimp shaft and provides an annular bearing surface.

11. The flexible cable of claim 10 , wherein the width of the annular bearing surface is from about 0.5 mm to about 3 mm.

12. The flexible cable of claim 7 , wherein the crimp shaft is from about 0.7 mm to about 4 mm in diameter, and from about 1.5 mm to about 4 mm in length.

13. The flexible cable of claim 1 , wherein the crimp shaft is configured to fit within a cannulated screw or bone reconstruction plate.
