1. A method of controlling insects which comprises applying to a locus where control is desired an insect-inactivating amount of a compound of the formula (I)

Y represents halogen, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 haloalkyl, C 2 -C 4 alkenyl, C 2 -C 4 haloalkenyl, C 2 -C 4 alkynyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, C 1 -C 4 haloalkoxy, CN, or NO 2 ;
X represents NO 2 , CN, or COOR 7 ;
n and m independently represent integers from 0-1;
R 1 represents C 1 -C 4 alkyl;
R 2 represents H, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 haloalkyl, C 2 -C 4 alkenyl, C 2 -C 4 haloalkenyl, C 2 -C 4 alkynyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, C 1 -C 4 haloalkoxy, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy substituted C 1 -C 4 alkyl, halo, CN, COOR 7 , COR 8 , CONR 7 R 8 , aryl, or arylalkyl;
R 3 represents H, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 haloalkyl, C 2 -C 4 alkenyl, C 2 -C 4 haloalkenyl, C 2 -C 4 alkynyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, C 1 -C 4 haloalkoxy, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy substituted C 1 -C 4 alkyl, halo, CN, SO p R 6 , COOR 7 , CONR 7 R 8 , aryl, or arylalkyl;
R 4 represents H, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 haloalkyl, C 2 -C 4 alkenyl, C 2 -C 4 haloalkenyl, C 2 -C 4 alkynyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, C 1 -C 4 haloalkoxy, CN, SO p R 6 , COOR 7 , CONR 7 R 8 , aryl, or arylalkyl;
R 5 represents H, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 haloalkyl, C 2 -C 4 alkenyl, C 2 -C 4 haloalkenyl, C 2 -C 4 alkynyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, C 1 -C 4 haloalkoxy, CN, SO p R 6 , COOR 7 , CONR 7 R 8 , aryl, or arylalkyl;
R 6 represents C 1 -C 4 alkyl or C 1 -C 4 haloalkyl;
R 7 represents C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 haloalkyl, C 3 -C 6 alkenyl, C 3 -C 6 alkynyl, C 3 -C 6 haloalkenyl, aryl, or arylalkyl; and
R 8 represents H, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 haloalkyl, C 3 -C 6 alkenyl, C 3 -C 6 alkynyl, C 3 -C 6 haloalkenyl, aryl, or arylalkyl;
with the proviso that when Het represents 6-halopyridin-3-yl, 6-(C 1 -C 4 )alkylpyridin-3-yl, or 6-(C 1 -C 4 )alkoxypyridin-3-yl, 6-(C 1 -C 4 )haloalkylpyridin-3-yl, then R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 do not represent hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or halo.
2. A method of claim 1 wherein Y represents halogen, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 haloalkyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, C 1 -C 4 haloalkoxy, CN, or NO 2 .
3. A method of claim 1 in which Y is halo or C 1 -C 4 haloalkyl.
4. A method of claim 1 in which X is NO 2 or CN.
5. A method of claim 1 in which m and n represent 0.
6. A method of claim 1 in which R 1 represents CH 3 or CH 2 CH 3 .
7. A method of claim 1 in which R 2 represents C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 haloalkyl, C 2 -C 4 haloalkenyl, C 2 -C 4 alkynyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy substituted C 1 -C 4 alkyl, or arylalkyl and R 3 represents hydrogen.
8. A method of claim 1 wherein said compound is part of a composition which comprises a said compound in combination with a phytologically-acceptable carrier.
