Abstract

A method for automatically adding a first sensor device to a first personal area network in a healthcare application includes receiving a signal with out-of-band pairing data at the first sensor device. The first sensor device is disposed on a patient's body. The out-of-band pairing data is injected into the patient's body by a second sensor device disposed on the patient's body. Pairing data is extracted from the received signal at the first sensor device. Using the pairing data, the first sensor device is added to the first personal area.

Claims (21)

1. A method for automatically adding a first sensor device to a first personal area network, the method comprising:

receiving a signal with out-of-band pairing data at the first sensor device, the first sensor device being disposed on a patient's body, the out-of-band pairing data having been injected into the patient's body by a second sensor device disposed on the patient's body and the out-of-band pairing data including a Bluetooth® address of the second sensor device;

extracting the pairing data from the received signal at the first sensor device;

transmitting a link key to the second sensor device to be used for authentication, wherein the link key is transmitted out-of-band and wherein the link key is generated based on both a Bluetooth® address of the first sensor device and the Bluetooth® address of the second device;

using the pairing data to add the first sensor device to the first personal area network, including sending the pairing data to a monitoring device using an in-band communication scheme;

determining, by the monitoring device, a correlation factor between the first sensor device and the second sensor device, wherein the correlation factor is calculated using one of the following physiological parameters detected by the first sensor device and the second sensor device: blood pressure, saturated oxygen content, heart rate, respiration rate or end-tidal carbon dioxide; and

using the correlation factor to determine if the first sensor device and the second sensor device are on the same patient.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the out-of-band pairing data includes an identifier for the first personal area network.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the identifier is a personal ID of the patient.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the signal is a low-current AC signal that is modulated with the out-of-band pairing data.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the low-current AC signal is between 50 to 300 microamperes peak to peak.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein extracting the pairing data from the received signal further comprises demodulating the received signal.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the signal is received at the first sensor device via an antenna that is included in the first sensor device.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a second link key from the second sensor device; and

authenticating by comparing the link key transmitted to the second sensor device and the second link key received from the second sensor device.

9. A method for automatically adding a first sensor device to a first personal area network, the method comprising:

receiving a signal with out-of-band pairing data at the first sensor device, the first sensor device being disposed on a patient's body, the out-of-band pairing data having been injected into the patient's body at periodic intervals by a second sensor device disposed on the patient's body;

extracting the pairing data from the received signal at the first sensor device; using the pairing data to add the first sensor device to the first personal area network;

determining, by a device, a correlation factor between the first and second sensor devices, wherein the correlation factor is calculated using one of the following physiological parameters detected by the first and second sensor device: blood pressure, saturated oxygen content, heart rate, respiration rate or end-tidal carbon dioxide; and

using the correlation factor to determine if the first and second sensor devices are on the same patient.
