Abstract

An inkjet printer assembly includes a cartridge having an integrated pagewidth printhead integrated circuit (IC); a cradle for receiving the cartridge; an air compressor for providing compressed air to the cartridge, the air compressor including a fan housing, an air filter, and an impeller, the fan housing having an air outlet adapted to mate with an air inlet port of the cartridge; a motor having a transmission assembly provided with a direct drive coupling from a spindle of the motor to the impeller of the air compressor; and a controller for determining a performance characteristic of the cartridge and to control an operation the printhead IC in response to the determined performance characteristic of the cartridge.

Claims (18)

1. An inkjet printer assembly comprising:

a cartridge having an integrated pagewidth printhead integrated circuit (IC);

a cradle for receiving the cartridge;

an air compressor for providing compressed air to the cartridge, the air compressor including a fan housing, an air filter, and an impeller, the fan housing having an air outlet adapted to mate with an air inlet port of the cartridge;

a motor having a transmission assembly provided with a direct drive coupling from a spindle of the motor to the impeller of the air compressor; and

a controller for determining a performance characteristic of the cartridge and to control an operation the printhead IC in response to the determined performance characteristic of the cartridge.

2. An inkjet printer assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising a print media transport assembly for transporting print media along a transport path past the printhead IC, and wherein the transmission assembly of the motor further includes a worm-gear and cog transmission connected to the print media transport assembly.

3. An inkjet printer assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising a rotor element having three faces, the three faces respectively for blotting the printhead IC, sealing the printhead IC, and acting as a platen.

4. An inkjet printer assembly according to claim 3 , further comprising a rotor element drive assembly for operating the rotor element, and wherein the transmission assembly of the motor further includes a worm-gear and cog transmission connected to the rotor element drive assembly.

5. An inkjet printer assembly according to claim 3 , wherein the cradle further includes a rotor element sensor unit for detect an orientation of the rotor element.

6. An inkjet printer assembly according to claim 5 , wherein the rotor element sensor unit includes a light source and a detector unit for detecting the present of reflected light.

7. An inkjet printer assembly according to claim 6 , wherein the rotor element has a reflective surface for facilitating the reflection of light from the light source to the detector unit.

8. An inkjet printer assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the cartridge includes an authentication IC storing the performance characteristic of the cartridge, said IC connectable to the controller to facilitate communication of the performance characteristic to the controller.

9. An inkjet printer assembly according to claim 8 , wherein the controller is configured to determine performance characteristics including a number of printing inks present in the cartridge.

10. An inkjet printer assembly according to claim 4 , wherein the transmission assembly further includes a flipper gear assembly for selective engagement with the rotor element drive assembly, the flipper gear assembly including:

a first gear fixed to a drive shaft of the motor;

a second gear radially spaced from the first gear; and

a locating member retaining the second gear and the first gear in a meshed configuration.
