Abstract

An energy applicator for directing energy to tissue includes a feedline and a radiating section operably coupled to the feedline, wherein the radiating section has a length. The energy applicator also includes a length adjustment member adapted to allow for selective adjustment of the length of the radiating section. The length adjustment member includes a first pivot element and a first tensioning element coupled to the first pivot element.

Claims (42)

1. An energy applicator for directing energy to tissue, comprising:

a feedline having an inner conductor;

a pivot element disposed proximal to the radiating section, the pivot element coupled to the outer sleeve via a tensioning element, the pivot element configured to cause longitudinal movement of the outer sleeve to adjust the length of the radiating section;

an outer conductor having a distal end spaced apart by a gap distance from a proximal end of the radiating section to define a feed point therebetween; and

a gap adjustment member disposed proximal to the length adjustment member, the gap adjustment member adapted to allow for selective adjustment of the gap distance of the feed point.

2. The energy applicator of claim 1 , wherein the outer sleeve includes a sleeve body defining a chamber, the chamber configured to receive at least a portion of the inner sleeve.

3. The energy applicator of claim 2 , further comprising a biasing member configured to fit within the chamber.

4. The energy applicator of claim 1 , wherein the pivot element is operably coupled to an actuator, the actuator configured to automatically control the pivot element to adjust an ablation field radiated into tissue by adjusting the length of the radiating section.

5. The energy applicator of claim 1 , wherein the length adjustment member includes a biasing member adapted to exert a biasing force on the outer sleeve to urge the outer sleeve distally.

6. The energy applicator of claim 5 , wherein the biasing force of the biasing member is adjustable.

7. The energy applicator of claim 6 , wherein the biasing force of the biasing member is adjustable through the application of heat to the biasing member.

8. The energy applicator of claim 1 , wherein the outer sleeve is electrically conductive.

9. The energy applicator of claim 1 , wherein the pivot element is configured to rotate in a first direction to wind the tensioning element upon the pivot element and move the outer sleeve proximally relative to the feedline.

10. The energy applicator of claim 1 , wherein the pivot element is configured to rotate in a second direction to unwind the tensioning element from the pivot element and move the outer sleeve distally relative to the feedline.

11. An electrosurgical system, comprising:

a generator; and

an ablation device including:

a feedline;

a radiating section disposed at a distal portion of the feedline, wherein the radiating section has a length;

a radiation field adjustment member configured to selectively adjust an ablation field radiated about the radiating section into tissue, the radiation field adjustment member including an inner sleeve and an outer sleeve disposed around at least a portion of the inner sleeve, a portion of the outer sleeve positioned distal to a distal end of the feedline;

a pivot element disposed proximal to the radiating section, the pivot element coupled to the outer sleeve via a tensioning element, the pivot element configured to cause longitudinal movement of the outer sleeve to adjust the ablation field radiated about the radiating section;

a conductor having a distal end spaced apart by a gap distance from a proximal end of the radiating section to define a feed point therebetween; and

a gap adjustment member disposed proximal to the radiation field adjustment member, the gap adjustment member adapted to allow for selective adjustment of the gap distance of the feed point.

12. The electrosurgical system of claim 11 , wherein the inner sleeve further includes a hollow body and an end cap adapted to close an open end of the hollow body.

13. The electrosurgical system of claim 12 , wherein the end cap includes an aperture defined therein configured to allow passage of a portion of the feedline.

14. The electrosurgical system of claim 12 , wherein the pivot element is operably coupled to an actuator, the actuator configured to automatically control the pivot element to adjust an ablation field radiated into the tissue by adjusting the length of the radiating section.

15. The electrosurgical system of claim 11 , wherein the outer sleeve includes a sleeve body defining a chamber, the chamber configured to receive at least a portion of the inner sleeve.

16. The electrosurgical system of claim 15 , further comprising a biasing member configured to fit within the chamber.

17. The electrosurgical system of claim 16 , wherein the biasing member includes an interior open space configured to allow an inner conductor to extend distally from an outer surface of an end cap into the chamber.

18. The electrosurgical system of claim 11 , wherein the generator includes a processor and wherein the radiation field adjustment member further includes an actuator electrically coupled to the processor, the actuator operably coupled to the pivot element, the processor adapted to control the actuator to turn the pivot element in at least one of a first rotational direction or a second rotational direction.

19. An electrosurgical system, comprising:

a generator; and
