Abstract

Systems, methods, apparatuses and computer program products provide alternative desktop computing solutions and generally provide client devices configured to utilize one of a local common base image and a common base image stored remotely, with a user-specific overlay image remotely storing user specific data. The clients can be configured to store the common base image locally.

Claims (38)

1. An apparatus comprising:

one or more processors;

a network interface configured to access one or more of a base image configured for a plurality of users and stored on a remote storage device; and, a user overlay image stored on the remote storage device; and

one or more storage devices comprising computer-executable program code, the computer executable program code being executable by the one or more processors and comprising:

computer executable program code configured to access the base image; and

computer executable program code configured to proceed through a first boot of the base image;

wherein the base image has been modified to include common operating system files that are normally uninstalled from the base image during image generalization and not require writing one or more common operating system files to the user overlay image; and

wherein the common operating system files are included in the base image by removing device information during a generalized pass.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the base image comprises a common operating system configured for a plurality of users.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the user overlay image comprises user-specific data.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the computer readable program code further comprises a hypervisor.

5. The apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the hypervisor is configured to establish a virtualization layer that presents the remote storage device as a local drive.

6. The apparatus according to claim 5 , further comprising a local cache.

7. The apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein the local cache comprises a copy of the base image.

8. The apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the hypervisor is configured to redirect read actions of the apparatus to one or more of the copy of the base image or the user overlay image.

9. The apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the hypervisor is further configured to redirect all write actions to the user overlay image.

10. A method comprising:

establishing a network connection between an apparatus and a remote storage device having one or more of a base image configured for a plurality of users and a user overlay image;

accessing the base image with the apparatus; and

proceeding through a first boot of the base image with the apparatus;

wherein the base image has been modified to include common operating system files that are normally uninstalled from the base image during image generalization and not require writing one or more common operating system files to the user overlay image; and

wherein the common operating system files are included in the base image by removing device information during a generalized pass.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the base image comprises a common operating system configured for a plurality of users.

12. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the user overlay image comprises user-specific data.

13. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising loading a hypervisor at the apparatus.

14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the hypervisor is configured to establish a virtualization layer that presents the remote storage device as a local drive of the apparatus.

15. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising configuring a local cache of the apparatus.

16. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the local cache comprises a copy of the base image.

17. The method according to claim 16 , wherein the hypervisor is configured to redirect read actions of the apparatus to one or more of the copy of the base image or the user overlay image.

18. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the hypervisor is further configured to redirect all write actions to the user overlay image.

19. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the local cache comprises a local hard disk of the apparatus.

20. A computer program product comprising:

a computer readable storage medium having computer executable program code embodied therewith, the computer readable program code comprising:

computer executable program code configured to establish a network connection between an apparatus and a remote storage device having one or more of a base image configured for a plurality of users and a user overlay image;

computer executable program code configured to access the base image with the apparatus; and

computer executable program code configured to proceed through a first boot of the base image with the apparatus;

wherein the base image has been modified to include common operating system files that are normally uninstalled from the base image during image generalization and not require writing one or more common operating system files to the user overlay image; and

wherein the common operating system files are included in the base image by removing device information during a generalized pass.
