Abstract

A printhead integrated circuit that has a nozzle, a thermal actuator for ejecting ink through the nozzle, an open actuator test input, a column enable input, a row enable input, a drive transistor for connecting the thermal actuator to a power supply when the column enable input and the row enable input are asserted, a sense node, and a sense transistor for connecting the sense node to the drive transistor drain when the open actuator test input is asserted. During use the sense node is pulled high when the row enable input, the column enable input and the open actuator test are all asserted, and the thermal actuator is open circuit.

Claims (17)

1 . A printhead integrated circuit comprising:

a nozzle;

a thermal actuator for ejecting ink through the nozzle;

an open actuator test input;

a column enable input;

a row enable input;

a drive transistor for connecting the thermal actuator to a power supply when the column enable input and the row enable input are asserted;

a sense node;

a sense transistor for connecting the sense node to the drive transistor drain when the open actuator test input is asserted; such that,

the sense node is pulled high when the row enable input, the column enable input and the open actuator test are all asserted, and the thermal actuator is open circuit.

2 . The printhead integrated circuit according to claim 1 further comprising a bleed transistor arranged in parallel with the thermal actuator such that the bleed transistor activates when the row enable input or the column enable input are not asserted to pull the drive transistor drain low.

3 . The printhead integrated circuit according to claim 2 further comprising a controller with suitable logic gates to configure the activation or deactivation of the relevant transistors according to voltage levels applied to the respective inputs.

4 . The printhead integrated circuit according to claim 3 , wherein the logic gates are selected from the group consisting of: AND, NAND and NOT gates.

5 . The printhead integrated circuit according to claim 4 , wherein the controller is configured to record the thermal actuator in a dead nozzle map if the sense node registers high when the open actuator test input is activated.

6 . The printhead integrated circuit according to claim 5 , wherein the controller is configured to perform an open actuator test shortly after the printhead has finished printing.

7 . The printhead integrated circuit according to claim 5 wherein the controller is configured to perform the open actuator test between printing sequential pages of a document by the printhead.

8 . The printhead integrated circuit according to claim 5 wherein the drive, bleed and sense transistors are selected from the group consisting of p-FET and n-FET devices.
