Abstract

A cooling assembly for a dual electronic image assembly having an open and closed gaseous loop. A closed gaseous loop allows circulating gas to travel across the front surface of a pair of electronic image assemblies and through a heat exchanger. An open loop allows ambient gas to pass through the heat exchanger and extract heat from the circulating gas. An optional additional open loop may be used to cool the back portion of the electronic image assembly (optionally a backlight). The cooling assembly can be used with any type of electronic assembly for producing an image. Some embodiments use cross-flow heat exchangers comprised of corrugated plastic.

Claims (61)

1. A cooling system for back-to-back electronic image assemblies, each electronic image assembly having a front and rear portion, the system comprising:

a pair of front display surfaces spaced apart from the front portion of each electronic image assembly;

a pair of channels defined by the space between the front display surface and the front portion of each electronic image assembly;

a heat exchanger in gaseous communication with the channels, the heat exchanger having first and second gas pathways, where the first gas pathway is in gaseous communication with the channels;

a first fan assembly positioned so as to force circulating gas through the channels and the first gas pathway; and

a second fan assembly positioned so as to force ambient gas through the second gas pathway.

2. The cooling system of claim 1 wherein:

the heat exchanger is a cross-flow heat exchanger.

3. The cooling system of claim 1 further comprising:

a surface spaced apart from the rear portion of each electronic image assembly; and

a second pair of channels defined by the space between the surfaces and the rear portion of the electronic image assemblies.

4. The cooling system of claim 3 wherein:

the second fan assembly is further positioned so as to force ambient gas through the second pair of channels.

5. The cooling system of claim 3 further comprising:

a third fan assembly positioned so as to force ambient gas through the second pair of channels.

6. The cooling system of claim 1 wherein:

the front display surfaces each comprise a glass panel with a linear polarizer.

7. The cooling system of claim 1 wherein:

the front display surfaces each comprise two glass panels bonded together with optical adhesive.

8. The cooling system of claim 1 wherein:

the heat exchanger is comprised of several layers of corrugated plastic.

9. An electronic display assembly comprising:

a pair of electronic image assemblies, each assembly having a front and a rear portion and placed so that the rear portions are facing one another;

front display surfaces spaced apart from the front portion of each electronic image assembly;

channels defined by the space between each front display surface and the front portion of each electronic image assembly;

a heat exchanger having first and second gas pathways, where the first pathway is in gaseous communication with the channels;

a housing containing the electronic image assemblies, front display surfaces, channels, and heat exchanger, where the housing, channels, and first gas pathway of the heat exchanger define a closed gaseous loop;

a first fan assembly placed within the closed gaseous loop;

an inlet and exhaust aperture in the housing, where the inlet aperture, second pathway of the heat exchanger, and exhaust aperture define an open gaseous loop; and

a second fan assembly placed within the open gaseous loop.

10. The electronic display assembly of claim 9 wherein:

the heat exchanger is a cross-flow heat exchanger.

11. The electronic display assembly of claim 9 further comprising:

plates spaced apart from the rear portion of the electronic image assembly; and

second channels defined by the space between each plate and the rear portion of each electronic image assembly.

12. The electronic display assembly of claim 11 wherein:

wherein the inlet aperture, second channels, and exhaust aperture define a second open gaseous loop.

13. The electronic display assembly of claim 12 further comprising:

a third fan assembly placed within the second open gaseous loop.

14. The electronic display of claim 9 wherein:

the image assembly is a liquid crystal display.

15. The electronic display of claim 9 wherein:

the image assembly is an OLED display.

16. A dual electronic display assembly comprising:

two electronic image assemblies placed back-to-back, each assembly comprising:

a liquid crystal display (LCD) having an LED backlight,

a transparent front display surface spaced apart from the LCD, and

a front channel defined by the space between the front display surface and the LCD;

a pair of substantially parallel plates placed between the two LED backlights;

a center channel defined by the space between the plates, where the center channel is in gaseous communication with the front channels;

a heat exchanger placed between the plates and having first and second gas pathways, where the first pathway is in gaseous communication with the front and center channels;

a first fan positioned so as to force circulating gas through the channels and the first gas pathway; and

a second fan positioned so as to force ambient gas through the second gas pathway.

17. The dual electronic display assembly of claim 16 wherein:

the LED backlights are in thermal communication with the plates.

18. The dual electronic display assembly of claim 17 wherein:

the plates are in thermal communication with the heat exchanger.

19. The dual electronic display assembly of claim 16 wherein:

the LED backlights are direct LED backlights.

20. The dual electronic display assembly of claim 16 further comprising:

an electronic component placed between the plates.
