Abstract

The invention discloses a wireless communication handset comprising licensed wireless communication signal processing circuitry and unlicensed wireless communication signal processing circuitry. The invention further discloses a control circuit connected to both the licensed wireless communication signal processing circuitry and the unlicensed wireless communication signal processing circuitry, and a computer readable memory for directing the control circuit to function in a specified manner. This memory includes instructions to formulate a measurement report containing signal strength information that corresponds to the strength of a signal received through the unlicensed wireless communication signal processing circuitry. The measurement report also contains a request to transfer a wireless communication session from a licensed wireless system to an unlicensed wireless system. The memory further includes instructions to transmit the measurement report to the licensed wireless system through the licensed wireless communication signal processing circuitry.

Claims (39)

1. A method for registering a mobile station and handing over a communication session from a licensed wireless communication system to an unlicensed wireless communication system, the unlicensed wireless communication system comprising an indoor system server for communicatively coupling the unlicensed wireless communication system to the licensed wireless communication system, the method comprising:

at the mobile station, establishing the communication session with the licensed wireless communication system;

at the mobile station, establishing a connection with the unlicensed wireless communication system through the indoor system server while maintaining the communication session with the licensed wireless communication system;

sending a registration message from the mobile station to the indoor system server to register the mobile station with the unlicensed wireless communication system;

registering the mobile station with the unlicensed wireless communication system; and

after registering the mobile station with the unlicensed wireless communication system, handing over the communication session from the licensed wireless communication system to the unlicensed wireless communication system.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

at the mobile station, receiving a command from the licensed wireless communication system indicating that a handover of the communication session is required; and

sending a handover access message from the mobile station to the indoor system server to indicate that the mobile station has received the command from the licensed wireless communication system indicating that the handover is required.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising sending a measurement report from the mobile station to the licensed wireless communication system, the measurement report comprising a signal level associated with the unlicensed wireless communication system.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the signal level associated with the unlicensed wireless communication system is set to a maximum signal level.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising sending a handover complete indication from the mobile station to the indoor system server after handing over the communication session from the licensed wireless communication system to the unlicensed wireless communication system.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the registration message comprises an international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) of the mobile station and a location area identity (LAI).

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising receiving a registration acknowledgement message from the indoor system server.

8. A computer readable medium storing a computer program for registering a mobile station and handing over a communication session from a licensed wireless communication system to an unlicensed wireless communication system, the unlicensed wireless communication system comprising an indoor system server for communicatively coupling the unlicensed wireless communication system to the licensed wireless communication system, the computer program executable by a processor of the mobile station, the computer program comprising sets of instructions for:

establishing the communication session with the licensed wireless communication system;

establishing a connection with the unlicensed wireless communication system through the indoor system server while maintaining the communication session with the licensed wireless communication system;

sending a registration message to the indoor system server to register the mobile station with the unlicensed wireless communication system;

registering the mobile station with the unlicensed wireless communication system; and

after registering the mobile station with the unlicensed wireless communication system, handing over the communication session from the licensed wireless communication system to the unlicensed wireless communication system.

9. The computer readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the registration message comprises an international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) of the mobile station and a location area identity (LAI).

10. The computer readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the computer program further comprises a set of instructions for receiving a registration acknowledgement message from the indoor system server.

11. The computer readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the computer program further comprises a set of instructions for sending a handover complete message to the indoor system server after handing over the communication session from the licensed wireless communication system to the unlicensed wireless communication system.

12. The computer readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the computer program further comprises:

a set of instructions for receiving a command from the licensed wireless communication system indicating that a handover of the communication session is required; and

sending a handover access message to the indoor system server to indicate that the mobile station has received the command from the licensed wireless communication system indicating that the handover is required.

13. The computer readable medium of claim 8 further comprising a set of instructions for sending a measurement report from the mobile station to the licensed wireless communication system, the measurement report comprising a signal level associated with the unlicensed wireless communication system.

14. The computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the signal level associated with the unlicensed wireless communication system is set to a maximum signal level.

15. A mobile station comprising:

a first wireless interface to access an unlicensed wireless communication system using an unlicensed radio frequency;

a second wireless interface to access a licensed wireless communication system using a licensed radio frequency;

a third wireless interface to communicate with an indoor system server of the unlicensed wireless communication system, the indoor system server for communicatively coupling the unlicensed wireless communication system to the licensed wireless communication system;

a set of modules for (i) establishing a communication session with the licensed wireless communication system via the second wireless interface, (ii) establishing a connection with the unlicensed wireless communication system through the indoor system server, (iii) sending a registration message to the indoor system server to register the mobile station with the unlicensed wireless communication system, (iv) registering the mobile station with the unlicensed wireless communication system, and (v) handing over the communication session from the licensed wireless communication system to the unlicensed wireless communication system after registering the mobile station with the unlicensed wireless communication system.

16. The mobile station of claim 15 , wherein the set of modules are further for (i) receiving a command from the licensed wireless communication system indicating that a handover of the communication session is required and (ii) sending a handover access message from the mobile station to the indoor system server to indicate that the mobile station has received the command from the licensed wireless communication system indicating that the handover is required.

17. The mobile station of claim 15 , wherein the set of modules are further for sending a measurement report from the mobile station to the licensed wireless communication system, the measurement report comprising a signal level associated with the unlicensed wireless communication system.

18. The mobile station of claim 17 , wherein the signal level associated with the unlicensed wireless communication system is set to a maximum signal level.

19. The mobile station of claim 15 , wherein the set of modules are further for sending a handover complete indication from the mobile station to the indoor system server after handing over the communication session from the licensed wireless communication system to the unlicensed wireless communication system.
