Abstract

A surgical tissue therapy device includes a sealant layer and a collection chamber. The sealant layer functions so as to create a sealed enclosure, or space between it and the surface of a patient, by forming an airtight seal around a surgical area of skin trauma. The closed incision tissue therapy device also comprises a collection chamber, which may comprise an elongate tubular chamber with a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings. The collection chamber may be configured to be in fluid communication with the sealant layer and the area of skin trauma and functions as to distribute the negative pressure applied to a surgically closed area of skin trauma. Preferably, the pressure under the sealant layer is reduced by expanding the volume of the enclosure space and thereby decreasing the density of air molecules under the sealant layer. The collection material may comprise a material and/or a configuration that permits length changes based upon the length of the corresponding surgical wound or incision.

Claims (28)

1. A method of applying reduced pressure therapy to an area of skin, comprising:

grasping a first tab and a second tab coupled to an elastic element;

pulling the first and second tabs away from one another to stretch the elastic element and to place the elastic element in a state of tension;

positioning the first tab on a first side of an incision and the second tab on a second side of the incision opposite the first side;

attaching the elastic element to a surface of the skin while maintaining the elastic element in the state of tension and such that the elastic element extends across and over a longitudinal axis of the incision;

releasing tension in the elastic element so that the elastic element exerts a force on the skin that draws opposed skin edges of the incision toward one another;

forming a sealed space around at least a portion of the incision in the area of skin;

reducing pressure within the sealed space to expose the incision to reduced pressure.

2. A method as in claim 1 , wherein attaching the elastic element to a surface of the skin comprises attaching the first tab to the first side of the incision and the second tab to the second side of the incision.

3. A method as in claim 1 , wherein attaching the elastic element to a surface of the skin comprises using an adhesive to attach the elastic element to the surface of the skin.

4. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the elastic element exerts a force along a plane parallel to a plane of the skin surface.

5. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the elastic element exerts a force oriented transverse to a length of the incision of the skin surface.

6. A method as in claim 1 , wherein forming a sealed space around the incision in the area of skin comprises placing a sealant structure on a surface of the skin around the incision, wherein the sealed space is at least partially positioned between the surface of the skin and the sealant structure.

7. A method as in claim 6 , wherein the elastic element is part of the sealant structure.

8. A method as in claim 6 , wherein the elastic element is attached to the sealant structure.

9. A method as in claim 6 , wherein the incision has an elongated contour and wherein the sealed space conforms to the elongated contour of the incision.

10. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the elastic element comprises a first elastic element and a second elastic element, and wherein attaching the elastic element to a surface of the skin comprises attaching the first elastic element to the first side of the incision and attaching the second elastic element to the second side of the incision.

11. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the elastic element is attached to the skin after the sealed space is formed.

12. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the elastic element is the sealant structure.

13. A method as in claim 10 , wherein the first elastic element and second elastic element are attached to the skin at the same time.

14. A method as in claim 1 , wherein a stretch limiting element limits an amount of stretch that can be applied to the elastic element.

15. A method as in claim 1 , wherein forming a sealed space around the incision in the area of skin comprises:

positioning an elongated structure over the incision;

positioning a flexible sealant structure over the elongated structure; and

sealing the flexible sealant structure to the skin to form the sealed space.

16. A method as in claim 15 , further comprising:

positioning a contact layer under the elongated structure so that the contact layer is in direct contact with the incision, wherein the contact layer is configured to provide fluid communication between the elongated structure and the incision.

17. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the elongated structure forms an elongated chamber.
