Abstract

A system and method are disclosed which may include receiving an activation request from a first subscriber device at a communication convergence platform; identifying a service provider associated the first subscriber device; composing a service activation request compatible with a communication protocol for the identified service provider; and transmitting the service activation request from the platform to the identified service provider.

Claims (60)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving at a communication convergence platform from a first subscriber device, an activation request, wherein the activation request includes an owner selected preferred communication service provider (CSP) for the first subscriber device;

transmitting by the communication convergence platform to the selected CSP, an account enquiry after receiving the activation request;

receiving at the communication convergence platform from the selected CSP, an order validation, wherein the order validation is in response to the account enquiry;

initiating between the communication convergence platform and the selected CSP, an account setup for the first subscriber device, wherein a rate plan is established for the account during the setup;

receiving at the communication convergence platform from a third party system, an insurance notification for the first subscriber device;

activating by the communication convergence platform, the first subscriber device after receiving the insurance notification and setting up the account and rate plan; and

transmitting by the communication convergence platform to the first subscriber device, a notification indicating that the activation is complete.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

implementing operations for subscriber device management at said communication convergence platform, the operations including order management.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the operations implemented at said communication convergence platform include one or more operations selected from the group consisting of:

order management; service eligibility for said first subscriber device; account management; credit card payment and billing; and activation and provisioning of the first subscriber device.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

maintaining at the communication convergence platform, a list of service providers and respective groups of service packages available at said service providers.

5. The method of claim 4 further comprising:

identifying by the communication convergence platform, the selected CSP and service package that corresponds to the first subscriber device.

6. The method of claim 4 further comprising:

maintaining at the communication convergence platform, an archive of communication protocols corresponding to respective service providers accessible by the communication convergence platform;

composing by the communication convergence platform, a service activation request, wherein the service activation request is composed using a communication protocol in the archive that is determined to be compatible with the selected CSP; and

transmitting by the communication convergence platform to the selected CSP, the service activation request.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

conducting a credit check of the owner of the first subscriber device using the communication convergence platform.

8. The method of claim 7 further comprising:

determining whether a credit rating uncovered during said credit check matches that needed for a particular communication services provider.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

the communication convergence platform providing a dynamic product catalog to the owner of the first subscriber device.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

linking the communication convergence platform directly into an operating system of the first subscriber device.

11. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

deploying an Application Programming Interface (API) at said communication convergence platform; and

using said API to enable users of subscriber devices to activate services and devices with methods that are independent of the CSPs said subscriber devices operate on.

12. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

the communication convergence platform checking a coverage level by the selected communication service provider in a specified geographic area.

13. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

receiving a disconnect request to deactivate services for the first subscriber device.

14. The method of claim 13 further comprising:

issuing order status notifications in response to the incoming disconnect request.

15. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

collecting order and system information throughout the progress of requesting activation of the first subscriber device; and

presenting the collected information to the owner of the first subscriber device.

16. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

enabling the use of a single, standardized message for activating the first subscriber device, independent of a manufacturer thereof, on any communication service provider network.

17. A communication method comprising:

receiving an activation request from a first subscriber device at a communication convergence platform; and

enabling the communication convergence platform to serve as an interface between (a) said first: subscriber device and a communication service provider (CSP) for said activation request; and (b) between said first subscriber device and third party systems for processing financial transactions associated with said activation of said first subscriber device;

wherein the communication convergence platform interfaces with the first subscriber device, the CSP, and the third party systems by performing the following tasks:

(42) transmitting by the communication convergence platform to the CSP, an account enquiry after receiving the activation request;

(ii) receiving at the communication convergence platform from the CSP, an order validation, wherein the order validation is in response to the account enquiry;

(iii) initiating between the communication convergence platform and the CSP, an account setup for the first subscriber device, wherein a rate plan is established for the account during the setup;

(iv) receiving at the communication convergence platform from one of the third party systems, an insurance notification for the first subscriber device;

(v) activating by the communication convergence platform, the first subscriber device after receiving the insurance notification and setting up the account and rate plans; and

(vi) transmitting by the communication convergence platform to the first subscriber device, a notification indicating that the activation is complete.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the third party systems include at least one the group consisting of: third-party logistics providers, merchant banks, and common enterprise billers.

19. The method of claim 17 wherein the communication convergence platform conforms to Payment Card Industry (PCI) standards for payment account data security.

20. The method of claim 19 further comprising:

enabling purchasing items by a user of said first subscriber device using said PCI standards.

21. The method of claim 19 further comprising:

enabling at least one of (a) money transfers; and (b) financial transactions by said first subscriber device using said PCI standards.

22. The method of claim 17 further comprising:

enabling said communication convergence platform to serve as a universal interface between a plurality of subscriber devices using respective operating systems thereon and a plurality of communication service providers using respective operating systems.
