Abstract

Various embodiments relate to bearing assemblies configured to enable removal and replacement of superhard bearing elements, and bearing apparatuses that may utilize such bearing assemblies. The disclosed bearing assemblies may be used in a number of applications, such as downhole motors in subterranean drilling systems, directional drilling systems, roller-cone drill bits, and many other applications. In an embodiment, a bearing assembly includes a support ring and a retention ring assembled with the support ring. The retention ring includes a plurality of through holes. The bearing assembly further includes a plurality of superhard bearing elements, with each superhard bearing element inserted partially through and projecting from a corresponding one of the through holes of the retention ring. The retention ring and each superhard bearing element are collectively configured to restrict displacement of each superhard bearing element beyond a selected position in a direction away from the support ring.

6. The bearing assembly of claim 2 wherein the polycrystalline diamond body is at least partially leached of catalyst.

7. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein the support ring comprises a flange configured to facilitate alignment of the retention ring therewith.

8. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of fasteners configured to fasten the support ring and retention ring together.

9. The bearing assembly of claim 8 wherein each of the plurality of fasteners extends completely through the support ring and only partially through the retention ring.

10. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein:

the support ring and the retention ring each extend about a thrust axis; and

displacement of each of the plurality of superhard bearing elements in a direction generally parallel to the thrust axis is restricted due to physical interference between each of the plurality of superhard bearing elements and the retention ring.

11. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein displacement of each of the plurality of superhard bearing elements in a radial direction is restricted due to physical interference between each of the plurality of superhard bearing elements and the retention ring.

12. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of through holes of the retention ring exhibits a non-uniform lateral dimension.

13. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of through holes exhibits a substantially frustoconical cross-sectional geometry.

14. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of superhard bearing elements comprises a bearing surface, and wherein the base exhibits a larger lateral cross-sectional dimension than that of the bearing surface.
