Abstract

The presentment and redemption system offers discounts directly to consumers through their mobile phones. The discounts are based upon the user of the mobile phone meeting a targeting criterion and the discounts are determined using the targeting criterion. Mobile phone users that do not meet the targeting criterion are not eligible for the discount. Because the discounts can be targeted to each individual consumer, there can be a better correlation between consumers' interests and the transmitted discounts.

Claims (83)

1. A method, comprising:

determining crossing of a physical threshold comprising an entrance of a retail store by a first user of a first mobile phone and a second user of a second mobile phone based on triggers including a rapid degradation of a first signal and a concurrent rapid improvement of a second signal, wherein the triggers are detected by a client-side application at each of the first mobile phone and the second mobile phone and wherein the first signal comprises a global positioning system (GPS) signal;

using a server-side processor for determining that the first user satisfies first targeting criteria and is eligible for a first reward for entrance into the retail store and determining that the second user satisfies second targeting criteria and is eligible for a second reward for entrance into the retail store, wherein the first reward for entrance and the second reward for entrance are different; and

providing the first reward to the first user as the first user enters the retail store and the second reward to the second user as the second user enters the retail store via the client-side application at each of the first mobile phone and the second mobile phone;

wherein the client-side application at each of the first mobile phone and the second mobile phone is configured to automatically receive available rewards associated with the retail store from the server-side processor and wherein different users are rewarded differently for entrance into the retail store based on different targeting criteria being satisfied.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second signal comprises a sound signal.

3. A system, comprising:

a server-side processor configured to:

determine crossing of a physical threshold comprising an entrance of a retail store by a first user of a first mobile phone and a second user of a second mobile phone based on triggers including a rapid degradation of a first signal and a concurrent rapid improvement of a second signal, wherein the triggers are detected by a client-side application at each of the first mobile phone and the second mobile phone that is in communication with the server-side processor and wherein the first signal comprises a global positioning system (GPS) signal;

determine that the first user satisfies first targeting criteria and is eligible for a first reward for entrance into the retail store and that the second user satisfies second targeting criteria and is eligible for a second reward for entrance into the retail store, wherein the first reward for entrance and the second reward for entrance are different; and

provide the first reward to the first user as the first user enters the retail store and the second reward to the second user as the second user enters the retail store via the client-side application at each of the first mobile phone and the second mobile phone;

wherein the client-side application at each of the first mobile phone and the second mobile phone is configured to automatically receive available rewards associated with the retail store from the server-side processor and wherein different users are rewarded differently for entrance into the retail store based on different targeting criteria being satisfied; and

a memory coupled to the server-side processor and configured to provide instructions to the server-side processor.

4. A computer program product embodied in a non-transitory computer usable storage medium and comprising computer instructions for:

determining crossing of a physical threshold comprising an entrance of a retail store by a first user of a first mobile phone and a second user of a second mobile phone based on triggers including a rapid degradation of a first signal and a concurrent rapid improvement of a second signal, wherein the triggers are detected by a client-side application at each of the first mobile phone and the second mobile phone and wherein the first signal comprises a global positioning system (GPS) signal;

determining that the first user satisfies first targeting criteria and is eligible for a first reward for entrance into the retail store and determining that the second user satisfies second targeting criteria and is eligible for a second reward for entrance into the retail store, wherein the first reward for entrance and the second reward for entrance are different; and

providing the first reward to the first user as the first user enters the retail store and the second reward to the second user as the second user enters the retail store via the client-side application at each of the first mobile phone and the second mobile phone;

wherein the client-side application at each of the first mobile phone and the second mobile phone is configured to automatically receive available rewards associated with the retail store from a server-side processor and wherein different users are rewarded differently for entrance into the retail store based on different targeting criteria being satisfied.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second signal comprises a Bluetooth signal.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the first reward and the second reward comprises redeemable points.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the first targeting criteria and the second targeting criteria comprises demographic information.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the demographic information comprises one or both of gender and age.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the first targeting criteria and the second targeting criteria comprises previous shopping history.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the first targeting criteria and the second targeting criteria comprises a purchase history.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the first targeting criteria and the second targeting criteria comprises user status.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the first targeting criteria and the second targeting criteria comprises user association with a prescribed badge.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first reward and the second reward are redeemable with a purchase at the retail store.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining and providing an additional reward to either or both the first user and the second user based on one or more actions associated with the retail store.

15. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining and providing an additional reward to either or both the first user and the second user for posting of information relating to any received reward on a social networking service.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second signal comprises a radio frequency (RF) signal.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the rapid degradation of the first signal comprises a sudden decrease of location data accuracy.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second signal comprises a WiFi signal.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second signal comprises a magnetic field.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second signal encodes a store identifier identifying the retail store and is transmitted by a transmitter in the retail store and received by the client-side application at each of the first mobile phone and the second mobile phone.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second signal comprises a signal transmitted by a transmitter or a beacon in the retail store.

22. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second signal comprises a barcode or other unique picture.

23. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second signal comprises a LAN (local area network) signal.

24. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second signal comprises a PAN (personal area network) signal.

25. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second signal comprises a cellular signal.

26. The system of claim 3 , wherein the second signal comprises a sound signal.

27. The system of claim 3 , wherein the second signal comprises a Bluetooth signal.

28. The system of claim 3 , wherein each of the first reward and the second reward comprises redeemable points.

29. The system of claim 3 , wherein each of the first targeting criteria and the second targeting criteria comprises demographic information.

30. The system of claim 29 , wherein the demographic information comprises one or both of gender and age.

31. The system of claim 3 , wherein each of the first targeting criteria and the second targeting criteria comprises previous shopping history.

32. The system of claim 3 , wherein each of the first targeting criteria and the second targeting criteria comprises a purchase history.

33. The system of claim 3 , wherein each of the first targeting criteria and the second targeting criteria comprises user status.

34. The system of claim 3 , wherein each of the first targeting criteria and the second targeting criteria comprises user association with a prescribed badge.

35. The system of claim 3 , wherein the first reward and the second reward are redeemable with a purchase at the retail store.

36. The system of claim 3 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine and provide an additional reward to either or both the first user and the second user based on one or more actions associated with the retail store.

37. The system of claim 3 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine and provide an additional reward to either or both the first user and the second user for posting of information relating to any received reward on a social networking service.

38. The system of claim 3 , wherein the second signal comprises a radio frequency (RF) signal.

39. The system of claim 3 , wherein the rapid degradation of the first signal comprises a sudden decrease of location data accuracy.

40. The system of claim 3 , wherein the second signal comprises a WiFi signal.

41. The system of claim 3 , wherein the second signal comprises a magnetic field.

55. The computer program product of claim 4 , wherein each of the first targeting criteria and the second targeting criteria comprises user status.

56. The computer program product of claim 4 , wherein each of the first targeting criteria and the second targeting criteria comprises user association with a prescribed badge.

57. The computer program product of claim 4 , wherein the first reward and the second reward are redeemable with a purchase at the retail store.

58. The computer program product of claim 4 , further comprising computer instructions for determining and providing an additional reward to either or both the first user and the second user based on one or more actions associated with the retail store.

59. The computer program product of claim 4 , further comprising computer instructions for determining and providing an additional reward to either or both the first user and the second user for posting of information relating to any received reward on a social networking service.

60. The computer program product of claim 4 , wherein the second signal comprises a radio frequency (RF) signal.

61. The computer program product of claim 4 , wherein the rapid degradation of the first signal comprises a sudden decrease of location data accuracy.

62. The computer program product of claim 4 , wherein the second signal comprises a WiFi signal.
