BODY-WORN VITAL SIGN MONITOR
The invention provides a body-worn vital sign monitor that measures a patient's vital signs (e.g. blood pressure, SpO2, heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature) while simultaneously characterizing their activity state (e.g. resting, walking, convulsing, falling) and posture (upright, supine). The monitor processes this information to minimize corruption of the vital signs and associated alarms/alerts by motion-related artifacts. It also features a graphical user interface (GUI) rendered on a touchpanel display that facilitates a number of features to simplify and improve patient monitoring and safety in both the hospital and home.
1 . A system for monitoring a patient, comprising:
a mechanical housing configured to be worn on the patient's body;
a flexible strap connected to the mechanical housing and configured to wrap around a portion of the patient's body;
a vital sign monitor comprised by the mechanical housing and comprising at least one vital sign sensor configured to measure at least one of a vital sign value and a signal used to calculate a vital sign value; a processing component configured to receive data input from the vital sign sensor; a display device controlled by the processing component and configured to render at least two graphical user interfaces, with each graphical user interface comprising at least one screen, the first graphical user interface configured to display at least one of the vital sign value and the signal used to calculate the vital sign value, and the second graphical user interface configured to display content relating to at least one of entertainment, food service, games, and photographs; and a wireless transmitter configured to transmit information received by the processing component over a wireless interface.
2 . A system or monitoring a patient, comprising:
a mechanical housing configured to be worn on the patient's body;
a flexible strap connected to the mechanical housing and configured to wrap around a portion of the patient's body;
a vital sign monitor comprised by the mechanical housing and comprising at least one vital sign sensor configured to measure at least one of a vital sign value and a signal used to calculate a vital sign value; a processing component configured to receive data input from the vital sign sensor; a display device controlled by the processing component and configured to render at least two graphical user interfaces, with each graphical user interface comprising at least one screen, the first graphical user interface configured to display at least one of the vital sign value and the signal used to calculate the vital sign value, and the second graphical user interface configured to display content relating to non-medical features; and a wireless transmitter configured to transmit information received by the processing component over a wireless interface.
3 . A system for monitoring a patient, comprising:
a vital sign monitor comprised by a mechanical housing configured to attach to the patient's body, the vital sign monitor comprising at least one vital sign sensor configured to measure at least one of a vital sign value and a signal used to calculate a vital sign value; a processing component configured to receive data input from the vital sign sensor; a display device controlled by the processing component and configured to render at least two graphical user interfaces, with each graphical user interface comprising at least one screen, the first graphical user interface configured to display at least one of the vital sign value and the signal used to calculate the vital sign value, and the second graphical user interface configured to display content relating to non-medical features; and a wireless transmitter configured transmit information received by the processing component over a wireless interface.
4 . A system for monitoring a patient, comprising:
a mechanical housing configured to attach to the patient's body and comprising at least one vital sign sensor configured to measure at least one of a vital sign value and a signal used to calculate a vital sign value; and a processing component configured to receive data input from the vital sign sensor and control a display device configured to render a first graphical user interface configured to display at least one of the vital sign value and the signal used to calculate the vital sign value, and a second graphical user interface configured to display content relating to entertainment features.
5 . A system for monitoring a patient, comprising:
a mechanical housing configured to attach to the patient's body and comprising at least one vital sign sensor configured to measure at least one of a vital sign value and a signal used to calculate a vital sign value; and a processing component configured to receive data input from the vital sign sensor and control a display device configured to render a first graphical user interface configured to display at least one of the vital sign value and the signal used to calculate the vital sign value, and a second graphical user interface configured to display an image of the patient.
6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the display device is a touchpanel display.

The system of claim 6 , wherein the display device renders a first button that, once activated, initiates a display of at least one of the vital sign value and the signal used to calculate the vital sign value, and a second button that, once activated, initiates a display of content relating to at least one of entertainment, food service, games, and photographs.
8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the second graphical user interface is configured to display a photograph of at least one of the patient and a relative of the patient.
9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the mechanical housing further comprises a camera.
10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the processing component further comprises an interface to the camera configured to receive the photograph.
11 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the wireless transmitter is further configured to receive information over the wireless interface.
12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the wireless transmitter is further configured to receive a digital representation of the photograph taken by an external device over the wireless interface.
13 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the second graphical user interface is configured to display content relating to at least one of television, movies, music, and books.
14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the content comprises a list of available television channels, movies, music, and books.
15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the wireless transmitter is further configured to transmit and receive information from a remote server configured to store digital representations of at least one of television channels, movies, music, and books.
16 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the second graphical user interface is configured to display content relating to games configured to be played using the display device.
17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the games comprise input values generated when the patient contacts the touchpanel display.
18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the wireless transmitter is further configured to transmit and receive information from a remote server configured to store digital representations of the games.
19 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the second graphical user interface is configured to display content relating to a food-service menu.
20 . The system of claim 19 , wherein the food-service menu comprises a list of edible items.
21 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the wireless transmitter is further configured to transmit and receive information from a remote server configured to interface with a food-service system.
