Abstract

Methods and apparatus to prioritize mobile station transmissions in response to network acknowledgment polling are disclosed. An example method in a mobile station disclosed herein comprises receiving a request for acknowledgment information expected to be transmitted with data, and transmitting a control message in response to the request if a previously transmitted data block is associated with a tentative acknowledgment state, the control message including acknowledgment information.

Claims (32)

1. A method in a mobile station, the method comprising:

receiving a request for acknowledgment information expected to be transmitted with data; and

transmitting a control message in response to the request if a previously transmitted data block is associated with a tentative acknowledgment state, the control message including acknowledgment information.

2. A method as defined in claim 1 wherein the mobile station is to support a fast ACK/NACK reporting (FANR) feature in an enhanced general packet radio service (EGPRS) network, wherein the request is a poll for a piggy-backed ACK/NACK (PAN), and wherein the control message is an EGPRS packet downlink ACK/NACK control message.

3. A method as defined in claim 1 further comprising:

storing acknowledgment information associated with a set of data blocks previously transmitted by the mobile station in an acknowledge state array, each element of the acknowledge state array associated with a respective data block in the set of data blocks and to store an acknowledgment state associated with the respective data block, the acknowledgment state corresponding to at least one of a positive acknowledgment state, a negative acknowledgment state, a pending acknowledgment or the tentative acknowledgment state, wherein the previously transmitted data block is included in the set of data blocks, and

processing the acknowledge state array to determine whether the previously transmitted data block is associated with the tentative acknowledgment state.

4. A method as defined in claim 3 further comprising transmitting the control message in response to the request if the previously transmitted data block is associated with the tentative acknowledgment state and each other data block in the set of data blocks is associated with one of the positive acknowledgment state or the tentative acknowledgment state.

5. A method as defined in claim 3 further comprising transmitting the control message in response to the request if the previously transmitted data block is associated with the tentative acknowledgment state, a second data block in the set of data blocks is associated with a pending acknowledgment state, and each other data block in the set of data blocks is associated with one of the positive acknowledgment state, the tentative acknowledgment state or the pending acknowledgment state.

6. A method as defined in claim 1 further comprising transmitting the control message in response to the request if the previously transmitted data block is associated with a pending acknowledgment state.

7. A method as defined in claim 1 further comprising associating the previously transmitted data block with the tentative acknowledgment state when a positive acknowledgment for the previously transmitted data block is received in a PAN field.

8. A method as defined in claim 1 further comprising associating the previously transmitted data block with the tentative acknowledgment state when a positive acknowledgment for the previously transmitted data block is received, but the mobile station is to await further confirmation to determine that the previously transmitted data block was received successfully.

9. A tangible article of manufacture storing machine readable instructions which, when executed, cause a machine to:

receive a request for acknowledgment information expected to be transmitted with data; and

transmit a control message in response to the request if a previously transmitted data block is associated with a tentative acknowledgment state, the control message including acknowledgment information.

10. A tangible article of manufacture as defined in claim 9 wherein the machine is to support a fast ACK/NACK reporting (FANR) feature in an enhanced general packet radio service (EGPRS) network, wherein the request is a poll for a piggy-backed ACK/NACK (PAN), and wherein the control message is an EGPRS packet downlink ACK/NACK control message.

11. A tangible article of manufacture as defined in claim 9 wherein the machine readable instructions, when executed, further cause the machine to:

store acknowledgment information associated with a set of data blocks previously transmitted by the mobile station in an acknowledge state array, each element of the acknowledge state array associated with a respective data block in the set of data blocks and to store an acknowledgment state associated with the respective data block, the acknowledgment state corresponding to at least one of a positive acknowledgment state, a negative acknowledgment state, a pending acknowledgment or the tentative acknowledgment state, wherein the previously transmitted data block is included in the set of data blocks, and

process the acknowledge state array to determine whether the previously transmitted data block is associated with the tentative acknowledgment state.

12. A tangible article of manufacture as defined in claim 11 wherein the machine readable instructions, when executed, further cause the machine to transmit the control message in response to the request if the previously transmitted data block is associated with the tentative acknowledgment state and each other data block in the set of data blocks is associated with one of the positive acknowledgment state or the tentative acknowledgment state.

13. A tangible article of manufacture as defined in claim 11 wherein the machine readable instructions, when executed, further cause the machine to transmit the control message in response to the request if the previously transmitted data block is associated with the tentative acknowledgment state, a second data block in the set of data blocks is associated with a pending acknowledgment state, and each other data block in the set of data blocks is associated with one of the positive acknowledgment state, the tentative acknowledgment state or the pending acknowledgment state.

14. A tangible article of manufacture as defined in claim 9 wherein the machine readable instructions, when executed, further cause the machine to associate the previously transmitted data block with the tentative acknowledgment state when a positive acknowledgment for the previously transmitted data block is received in a PAN field.

15. A mobile station comprising:

a polling decoder to receive a poll for acknowledgment information expected to be piggy-backed with data; and

a transmit processor element to cause the mobile station to transmit a control message in response to the poll if at least one transmitted data block is associated with a tentative acknowledgment state, the control message including acknowledgment information.

16. A mobile station as defined in claim 15 wherein the mobile station is to support a fast ACK/NACK reporting (FANR) feature in an enhanced general packet radio service (EGPRS) network, wherein the poll is a poll for a piggy-backed ACK/NACK (PAN), and wherein the control message is an EGPRS ACK/NACK control message.

17. A mobile station as defined in claim 15 wherein the at least one transmitted data block is in a transmit window beginning at a starting block sequence number corresponding to a block sequence number associated with an oldest previously transmitted data block not associated with a positive acknowledgment state and extending to a block sequence number associated with a next new data block to be transmitted, but without extending past a particular window size.

18. A mobile station as defined in claim 15 further comprising:

an acknowledge state array stored in memory, each element of the acknowledge state array storing an acknowledgment state associated with a respective previously transmitted data block in a transmit window maintained by the mobile station, the acknowledgment state corresponding to at least one of a positive acknowledgment state, a negative acknowledgment state, a pending acknowledgment or the tentative acknowledgment state, and

an acknowledge state array processor to process the acknowledge state array and to determine whether the at least one transmitted data block is associated with the tentative acknowledgment state.

19. A mobile station as defined in claim 18 wherein the acknowledgment information included in the control message is first acknowledgment information, and the acknowledge state array processor is to update the acknowledge state array based on second acknowledgment information received from the network.

20. A mobile station as defined in claim 19 wherein the acknowledge state array processor is to update the acknowledge state array to associate the at least one transmitted data block with the tentative acknowledgment state when the second acknowledgment information is received in a PAN field and includes a positive acknowledgment for the at least one transmitted data block.
