Abstract

The detection system monitors WiFi wireless communications at a wireless device and detects a probe request associated with a location. The WiFi device may be a dedicated presence detection device or may offer access to internet and other services as a WiFi access point. A device identifier associated with the originating device may be a component of the probe request. Using the device identifier, the system can detect the presence of a consumer at the location associated with the wireless communications device and transmit information to the consumer based upon the device identifier.

Claims (66)

1. A method, comprising:

detecting, at a wireless communications device configured for WiFi communications at a store, a probe request from an originating device at the store scanning for an available WiFi network;

extracting a MAC address of the originating device from the probe request; and

providing the MAC address of the originating device to a server-side processor associated with a rewards service configured to infer presence of a user associated with the MAC address at the store, wherein in response to inferring presence the server-side processor is further configured to check whether the user is currently running an associated client-side rewards service application installed on the originating device, the server-side processor is configured to determine that the user is currently not running the client-side rewards service application installed on the originating device, and the server-side processor is configured to send a message to the originating device to notify the user to run the client-side rewards service application installed on the originating device to receive an offer or reward for presence at the store.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wireless communications device comprises a dedicated presence detection device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the rewards service comprises the server-side processor and client-side rewards service application.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the MAC address is provided to the server-side processor using WiFi.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, in response to receiving the probe request, allowing the originating device to connect and providing internet access to the originating device.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining that the MAC address corresponds to a type of device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the server-side processor is further configured to receive a second device identifier associated with the originating device, determine that the second device identifier is associated with the user, and infer the presence of the user at the store.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the offer or reward comprises an electronic coupon associated with the store.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the offer or reward comprises redeemable points.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the MAC address to the server-side processor comprises anonymizing the MAC address.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein anonymizing the MAC address includes hashing the MAC address.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining that the extracted MAC address has not previously been encountered at the store within a fixed period of time.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining that the MAC address is not associated with an employee of the store.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining that the originating device has not exceeded a threshold amount of presence at the store in a predetermined period of time.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the server-side processor is further configured to determine common visitors between the store and a second store using information received from the wireless communications device at the store and a second wireless communications device at the second store.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the server-side processor is associated with a partner of the rewards service.

17. A system comprising a wireless transceiver for WiFi communications at a store configured to:

receive a probe request from an originating device at the store scanning for an available WiFi network;

extract a MAC address of the originating device from the probe request; and

transmit the MAC address of the originating device to a server-side processor associated with a rewards service configured to infer presence of a user associated with the MAC address at the store, wherein in response to inferring presence the server-side processor is further configured to check whether the user is currently running an associated client-side rewards service application installed on the originating device, the server-side processor is configured to determine that the user is currently not running the client-side rewards service application installed on the originating device, and the server-side processor is configured to send a message to the originating device to notify the user to run the client-side rewards service application installed on the originating device to receive an offer or reward for presence at the store.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the wireless transceiver comprises a dedicated presence detection device.

19. The system of claim 17 , wherein the rewards service comprises the server-side processor and client-side rewards service application.

20. The system of claim 17 , wherein the MAC address is transmitted to the server-side processor using WiFi.

21. The system of claim 17 , wherein the wireless transceiver is further configured to allow the originating device to connect and provide internet access to the originating device.

22. The system of claim 17 , wherein the wireless transceiver comprises a wireless access point.

23. The system of claim 17 , wherein transmitting the MAC address includes anonymizing the MAC address.

24. A system, comprising:

a server-side processor associated with a rewards service configured to:

receive a MAC address of a user device from a wireless communications device that is configured: for WiFi communications at a store, to detect a probe request at the store from the user device, and to extract the MAC address of the user device from the detected probe request;

map the MAC address of the user device to a user registered with the rewards service;

check whether the user is currently running an associated client-side rewards service application on the user device;

determine that the user is currently not running the client-side rewards service application installed on the user device; and

send a message to the user device to notify the user to run the client-side rewards service application installed on the user device to receive an offer or reward for presence at the store; and

a memory coupled to the server-side processor and configured to provide instructions to the server-side processor.

25. The method of claim 1 , wherein to send the message comprises to push the message to the originating device.

26. The system of claim 17 , wherein the wireless transceiver is further configured to determine that the MAC address corresponds to a type of device.

27. The system of claim 17 , wherein the server-side processor is further configured to receive a second device identifier associated with the originating device, determine that the second device identifier is associated with the user, and infer the presence of the user at the store.

28. The system of claim 17 , wherein the offer or reward comprises an electronic coupon associated with the store.

29. The system of claim 17 , wherein the offer or reward comprises redeemable points.

30. The system of claim 23 , wherein anonymizing the MAC address includes hashing the MAC address.

31. The system of claim 17 , wherein the wireless transceiver is further configured to determine that the extracted MAC address has not previously been encountered at the store within a fixed period of time.

32. The system of claim 17 , wherein the wireless transceiver is further configured to determine that the MAC address is not associated with an employee of the store.

33. The system of claim 17 , wherein the wireless transceiver is further configured to determine that the originating device has not exceeded a threshold amount of presence at the store in a predetermined period of time.

34. The system of claim 17 , wherein the server-side processor is further configured to determine common visitors between the store and a second store using information received from the wireless transceiver at the store and a second wireless transceiver at the second store.

35. The system of claim 17 , wherein the server-side processor is associated with a partner of the rewards service.

36. The system of claim 17 , wherein to send the message comprises to push the message to the originating device.

37. The system of claim 24 , wherein the wireless communications device comprises a dedicated presence detection device.

38. The system of claim 24 , wherein the rewards service comprises the server-side processor and client-side rewards service application.

39. The system of claim 24 , wherein the MAC address is provided to the server-side processor using WiFi.

40. The system of claim 24 , wherein in response to detecting the probe request, the wireless communications device is configured to allow the user device to connect and provide internet access to the user device.

41. The system of claim 24 , wherein the server-side processor is further configured to determine that the MAC address corresponds to a type of device.

42. The system of claim 24 , wherein the server-side processor is further configured to receive a second device identifier associated with the user device, determine that the second device identifier is associated with the user, and infer the presence of the user at the store.

43. The system of claim 24 , wherein the offer or reward comprises an electronic coupon associated with the store.

44. The system of claim 24 , wherein the offer or reward comprises redeemable points.

45. The system of claim 24 , wherein the received MAC address is anonymized.

46. The system of claim 45 , wherein anonymizing the MAC address includes hashing the MAC address.

47. The system of claim 24 , wherein the server-side processor is further configured to determine that the MAC address has not previously been encountered at the store within a fixed period of time.

48. The system of claim 24 , wherein the server-side processor is further configured to determine that the MAC address is not associated with an employee of the store.

49. The system of claim 24 , wherein the server-side processor is further configured to determine that the user device has not exceeded a threshold amount of presence at the store in a predetermined period of time.

50. The system of claim 24 , wherein the server-side processor is further configured to determine common visitors between the store and a second store using information received from the wireless communications device at the store and a second wireless communications device at the second store.

51. The system of claim 24 , wherein the server-side processor is associated with a partner of the rewards service.

52. The system of claim 24 , wherein to send the message comprises to push the message to the user device.

53. The system of claim 24 , wherein the wireless communications device comprises a wireless access point.
