Abstract

Curable, phase-change compositions and inks used for printing three-dimensional objects including a curable monomer, a photoinitiator, a wax and a gellant, where the composition of the cured formulation has a room temperature modulus of from about 0.01 to about 5 Gpa. The curable monomer includes acrylic monomer, polybutadiene adducted with maleic anhydride, aliphatic urethane acrylate, polyester acrylate, 3-acryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, or acryloxypropyl t-structured siloxane.

Claims (72)

1. A three-dimensional printed object comprising:

a first component having a composition comprising a first radiation curable monomer; and

at least a second component having a composition comprising a second radiation curable monomer,

wherein each component has a room temperature storage modulus of from about 0.01 to about 5 GPa in its cured form, and

wherein the composition of the first and/or second component further comprises an amide gellant

wherein the first and/or second component comprising the amide gellant, when not in its cured form, is in a gel state when at room temperature, and

wherein the first and/or second radiation curable monomers are selected from the group consisting of polybutadiene adducted with maleic anhydride, 3-acryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, and acryloxypropyl t-structured siloxane.

2. The three-dimensional printed object of claim 1 , wherein each component has a room temperature storage modulus of less than about 1 GPa in its cured form.

3. The three-dimensional printed object of claim 1 , wherein the first and/or second component further comprises a radiation curable monomer selected from the group consisting of an acrylic monomer, an aliphatic urethane acrylate, and a polyester acrylate.

4. The three-dimensional printed object of claim 1 , wherein the composition of the first and/or second component further comprises:

a photoinitiator; and

a wax.

5. The three-dimensional printed object of claim 1 , wherein the first and/or second component has a viscosity of less than about 20 centipoise at jetting temperature of about 10 to 120° C. and a viscosity of about 10 4 to about 10 7 centipoise at room temperature.

6. The three-dimensional printed object of claim 1 , wherein the first and/or second component has a gel point of about 50 to about 70° C.

7. The three-dimensional printed object of claim 1 , wherein the composition of the first and/or second component further comprises a colorant.

8. The three-dimensional printed object of claim 1 , wherein the curable monomer is in an amount of from about 15 to about 60% by weight of the composition of the first and/or second component.

9. The three-dimensional printed object of claim 1 , wherein the curable monomer is in an amount of from about 15 to about 35%, or from about 40 to about 60% by weight of the composition of the first and/or second component.

10. The three-dimensional printed object of claim 1 , wherein the gellant is a compound of the following formula (I)

wherein R 1 is:

(i) an alkylene group having from about 1 to about 12 carbon atoms, wherein

the alkylene group is a divalent aliphatic group or alkyl group, and heteroatoms are optionally included in the alkylene group;

(ii) an arylene group having from about 1 to about 15 carbon atoms, wherein

the arylene group is a divalent aromatic group or aryl group, and heteroatoms are optionally present in the arylene group;

(iii) an arylalkylene group having from about 6 to about 32 carbon atoms, wherein

the arylalkylene group is a divalent arylalkyl group, wherein the alkyl portion of the arylalkylene group is linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated, and cyclic or acyclic, and wherein heteroatoms are optionally present in either the aryl or the alkyl portion of the arylalkylene group; or

(iv) an alkylarylene group having from about 5 to about 32 carbon atoms, wherein

the alkylarylene group is a divalent alkylaryl group, wherein the alkyl portion of the alkylarylene group is linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated, and cyclic or acyclic, and wherein heteroatoms are optionally present in either the aryl or the alkyl portion of the alkylarylene group;

R 2 and R 2 ′ each, independently of the other, is:

(i) alkylene groups having from about 1 to about 54 carbon atoms,

(ii) arylene groups having from about 5 to about 15 carbon atoms,

(iii) arylalkylene groups having from about 6 to about 32 carbon atoms, or

(iv) alkylarylene groups having from about 6 to about 32 carbon atoms;

R 3 and R 3 ′ each, independently of the other, is:

(a) a photoinitiating group derived from 1-(4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)phenyl)-2-hydroxy-2-methylpropan-1-one of the formula (II):

a group derived from 1-hydroxycyclohexylphenylketone of the formula (III):

a group derived from 2-hydroxy-2-methyl-1-phenylpropan-1-one of the formula (IV):

a group derived from N,N-dimethylethanolamine or N,N-dimethylethylenediamine, of the formula (V):

or the like; or

(b) a group which is:

(i) an alkyl group having from about 2 to about 100 carbon atoms, wherein the alkyl group is linear or branched, cyclic or acyclic, and substituted or unsubstituted, and wherein heteroatoms are optionally present in the alkyl group;

(ii) an aryl group having from about 5 to about 100 carbon atoms, wherein the aryl group is substituted or unsubstituted;

(iii) an arylalkyl group having from about 5 to about 100 carbon atoms; or

(iv) an alkylaryl group having from about 5 to about 100 carbon atoms; and

X and X′ each, independently of the other, is an oxygen atom or a group of the formula —NR 4 —, wherein R 4 is:

(i) a hydrogen atom;

(ii) an alkyl group having from about 5 to about 100 carbon atoms,

(iii) an aryl group having from about 5 to about 100 carbon atoms,

(iv) an arylalkyl group having from about 5 to about 100 carbon atoms, or

(v) an alkylaryl group having from about 5 to about 100 carbon atoms.

11. The three-dimensional printed object of claim 1 , wherein the first and/or second component is cured.

The three-dimensional printed object of claim 4 , wherein the photoinitiator is selected from the group consisting of benzyl ketones, monomeric hydroxyl ketones, α-alkoxy benzyl ketones, α-amino ketones, acyl phosphine oxides, metallocenes, benzophenone, benzophenone derivatives, isopropyl thioxanthenones, arylsulphonium salts and aryl iodonium salts.

13. The three-dimensional printed object of claim 4 , wherein the wax is functionalized with a curable group selected from the group consisting of acrylate, methacrylate, alkene, allylic ether, epoxide and oxetane.

14. A method of printing a three-dimensional object, the method comprising:

depositing a first composition comprising:

a radiation curable monomer;

a photoinitiator;

a wax; and

a gellant, wherein the cured composition has a room temperature storage modulus of from about 0.01 to about 5 GPa,

depositing a second composition comprising:

a radiation curable monomer;

a photoinitiator;

a wax; and

a gellant, wherein the cured composition has a room temperature storage modulus of from about 0.01 to about 5 GPa, upon a print region surface;

successively depositing additional amounts of the first and/or second composition to create a three-dimensional object; and

curing the deposited amounts of the first and second compositions;

thereby obtaining the three-dimensional object,

wherein the first and/or second composition, when not in its cured form, is in a gel state when at room temperature,

wherein the gellant of the first and/or second composition comprises an amide gellant, and

wherein the first and/or second radiation curable monomers are selected from the group consisting of polybutadiene adducted with maleic anhydride, 3-acryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, and acryloxypropyl t-structured siloxane.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein curing occurs after all amounts of the composition have been deposited.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the method of printing a three-dimensional object comprises digital fabrication or rapid prototyping.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein a thickness of the first and each successive amount of the composition is from about 0.02 mm to about 6 mm.
