Abstract

A printhead cradle is provided for removably receiving a printhead. The cradle has a controller for controlling operation of the received printhead and an electromagnet for causing movement of a movable capper of the printhead under control of the controller.

Claims (8)

1. A printhead cradle for removably receiving a printhead, the cradle comprising:

a controller for controlling operation of the received printhead; and

an electromagnet configured to be activated under control of the controller, the electromagnet being positioned within the cradle so that, when the printhead is received by the cradle, activation of the electromagnet exerts an electromagnetic force which causes movement of a movable capper of the printhead to uncap the printhead thereby enabling printing by the printhead under control of the controller.

2. A cradle according to claim 1 , wherein the electromagnet is in a recess of the cradle in which the printhead is received.

3. A cradle according to claim 2 , wherein the electromagnet is positioned within the recess to be proximate the capper of the received printhead.

4. A cradle according to claim 3 , wherein activation of the electromagnet by the controller causes movement of the capper to an uncapped position remote from printing nozzles of the printhead.

5. A cradle according to claim 4 , wherein the movement of the capper to the uncapped position is caused by at least a portion of the capper which is of magnetic material being magnetically attracted to the activated electromagnet.

6. A cradle according to claim 4 , wherein deactivation of the electromagnet by the controller causes movement of the capper to a capped position proximate the printing nozzles of the printhead.
