Abstract

A printhead is provided having an assembly of printhead modules. Each printhead module has a support defining fluid chambers, a fluid distributor on the support, and an integrated circuit on the distributor so that fluid in the chambers is distributed to the fluid ejection nozzles of the integrated circuit by the distributor. The support and distributor of each printhead module are shaped to define complementary formations on opposite sides of that printhead module so that the printhead modules are mated together in an angled fashion with the integrated circuits of the mated printhead modules abutting together and diagonally overlapping to define at least one row of fluid ejection nozzles of the printhead.

Claims (13)

1. A printhead comprising an assembly of a plurality of printhead modules, each printhead module comprising:

a support defining a plurality of fluid chambers;

a fluid distributor mounted on the support; and

an integrated circuit mounted on the distributor so that fluid in the chambers is distributed to the fluid ejection nozzles of the integrated circuit by the distributor,

wherein the support and distributor of each printhead module are shaped to define complementary formations on opposite sides of that printhead module so that the plurality of the printhead modules are mated together in an angled fashion with the integrated circuits of the mated printhead modules abutting together and diagonally overlapping to define at least one row of fluid ejection nozzles of the printhead.

2. A printhead as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each distributor is elongate and defines a pair of sets of transverse ribs and a channel located between the sets.

3. A printhead as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each printhead module comprises a Tape Automated Bond film to which the respective integrated circuit is adhered and electrically connected.

4. A printhead as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each chamber defines a filling funnel.

5. A printhead as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each support comprises a plurality of internal ribs which, in part, define the chambers.

6. A printhead as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each support comprises a cover molding from which a plurality of arms extend so that the support can be snap fitted to a reservoir of the printhead.

7. A printhead as claimed in claim 2 , wherein each elongate distributor comprises a micromolding.

8. A printhead as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the Tape Automated Bond film is mounted to the support to define a pair of obliquely oriented Tape Automated Bond film portions.

9. A printhead as claimed in claim 4 , wherein a plurality of hydrophobic collars extend from each support and bounding a respective filling funnel.
